Another UY Question

Sorry, I have no doubt this has been answered 100 times over, however I just want to make that I have it in my head straight. We just became owners at BLT our UY is August. We received all 2009 points and 2010 points when we purchased. We are taking a trip next June. I know, August not a good use year for summer travel. However we only have 2 years left that we will be boxed into "summer" vacation. Although we are tenatively planning a trip for November 2011 as well. Anyway back to June, 2011. If for some reason I have to change dates I will only have to the end of July 2011 to use those points....correct? If I don't use them I lose them? How difficult is it at that point to get a ressie at any of the DVC Resorts if we just have to push it back a few weeks say to the end of June or beginning of July. Thanks. Just trying to make sure I get the whole picture.

First. did you bank those August 2009 points as part of the purchase. If not, you need to call that sales rep now, immediately, and tell him that you need those points to be banked. You can do it as part of sale, but outside of sale you can only do it by end of eighth month of use year which has passed. If those points are not banked they will expire July 31, 2010 and must be used for trip before then. If banked they will not expire until July 31, 2011.

For June trip next year and assuming 2009 points have been banked: No matter what, if you cancel, you will have to use those banked points for a trip that ends by July 31, 2011 because they cannot be banked again.

If you also use August 2010 points for that trip and cancel by March 31, 2011, those points will go back into your account and you could bank them into the Aug 2011-12 use year because at time of cancellation you would still be within the eighth month banking window. If you cancel after March 31, 2011, you will not be able to bank those Aug 2010 points and they too must be used for a trip that ends by July 31, 2011.

It can be difficult to make reservations only a couple months in advance although with SSR or OKW there is more of a chance.

Thanks so much, you made that very clear and it really helps me to get it all straight. It is very hard when there is so much new information that has to be absorbed. Thanks as well about telling me to bank the 2009 points.....I should have mentioned I did that first thing within minutes of getting my membership number! So those are all set.

I have to admit that I am a bit nervous about planning a trip so close to the UY and only having such a short time to use those points if in fact something did happen. As I said though we only have to worry about that for another 2 years and then we will be able to travel at a different time. Maybe we should move our trip to August, though Florida in August can be brutal.

The problem with changing to August 2011 is that you would not be able to use those banked points from Aug 2009 for that trip because they expire July 31, 2011.

The reality is that members usually do not cancel. Because we go different times of year, I have often faced the same issue simply because one of those times is near end of use year and have not yet had to cancel.

Also, personally I do not feel June is any better heat wise from Aug ( and I have been both). There really is not much difference between an average high of 93 and 95.

Thanks for mentioning that I could't change the date of the trip due to the banked points. I realized that as soon as I hit "send", just didn't think it through before I typed it.

I so appreciate your explanation and advice, it is greatly appreciated. I am sure (as you mentioned yourself) taking trips near the UY jhappens often just because we all do travel at different times. We have been lucky that we have never had to cancel a trip yet. Just makes me a bit nervous not being able to simply "change hotel dates" if necessary, but I will get over it sooner than later Thanks again.
