Another UK question

I know there have been a couple of questions like this before, but I can't remember if it's been covered.

I know the UK as whole is a country, but what would England, Wales, etc. be considered? Are they like provinces?

England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are all countries in their own right, together they form the United Kingdom.

Great Britain is made up of England, Wales and Scotland. (You often see 'Great Britain and Northern Ireland' quoted).

I'm not sure I can answer this fully but I'll have a go

The United Kingdom is a collective name for England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, The Isle of Man and the Channel Islands.

England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland are countries
The Isle of Man is a British crown dependency which means that the Queen is the head of state - although it does have it's own parliament. The Channel Islands are the same, but don't have their own parliament.

There are many more 'rules' connected to each of these countries (for example, Scotland has it's own legal system) - which would totally confuse the issue - it even gives me a headache thinking about it.
