Sorry guys - I guess I'm just being REALLY dense about this...

I understand that you get your points at the beginning of each use year, and that you can book whenever wherever as long as the points will be available when you plan to use them -

So what's the big deal? I must be missing something -

I remember my guide telling me about banking - certain percentages by certain dates - fine, if you plan to have some LEFT!! Also, not a concern here...

I read a moment ago (what prompted these questions) about DVC reacquiring points (ROFR) and offering them for sale, and somehow "use year" played into this... why would it matter?

If (okay, WHEN) we get some more points, I'd like it to be at a different resort (for the 11-month resv. window) and I don't know if I should be concerned about use year, because our vacation times/dates/seasons vary tremendously.

Please help educate me on this!! THANKS!!

There is a longer waitlist for some use year months than for others and as a result, it is rumored that Disney will use its ROFR on those use years that go on the market in order to cut down on the waitlist. If there is no waitlist for a certain use year, it may make Disney wait until demand grows in order for them to excersise ROFR.

It is more seamless to have only one use year. That way you have only one member number and everything is listed under that. But it isn't a big deal either to have more than one but you need to be very organized and careful. Many on the Dis-Boards report having more than one use year (me included) and making it work effectively.

Use year is only important if you have to cancel your vacation. If you have a trip at the end of your use year and have to cancel, you won't be able to bank those points and you may only have a month or two to use them (and not be able to bank them). If its at the beginning and you have to cancel, you will have almost a whole year to use them or they can still be banked. That's one reason some people have different use years. For example a December use year for December trips and a June use year for July trips.

Good luck.

I think UY comes into play with ROFR when Disney has a long list of current members wanting certain UY's (prolly there original UY). Now why some UY have longer wait lists than others, I am not certain, but I believe Disney takes it into consideration, when buying up resales..... can they turn it over quickly....

The only real concern for keeping the same UY if you add on points is a book keeping one. It is much smoother to switch points around from different resorts when they have the same one, than different ones. Plus you only have one set of banking deadlines... again a book keeping issue.

There also could be some diffculties with small points left over in each UY..... combining them for one night..... Not sure since we havent run into it yet. We have 5 contracts, 3 home resorts and 2 UYs and so far our points have worked out even..... maybe some one else has a better answer to this...

Thanks folks, so much! This is very helpful info. I hadn't even considered the aspect of cancelling...and how much longer in the year I'd have to use/bank those points! Now it begins to make sense to me...:smooth:
