Another Transfer Question

What would happen in this situation. An owner had a 25 pt ownership at BCV, and transfered in 100 OKW pts. I think the correct answer would be that I have 25 pts for BCV and 100 pts for OKW, but what is the real world application of this scenario. :confused3 Where would I be able to book at the 11 month and 7 month windows and how many points would be available at each window. Thanks.

In theory, yes, that is how it is supposed to work. You could book BCV at 11 months out, with 25 points and OKW 11 months out with 100 points, or combine them for booking anywhere at 7 months.

I've been told by MS when transferring in points to our accout, that until the computer is "updated" it takes a manual pull on your account to determine the origin of the non-home resort points....resulting in the possibility that you couldn't book the 1st day or 2 of 11 month window until they verify.

Have always booked @ our home resorts 1st, then switched around @ 7 months, so I can't verify if this is just theory or practice.:confused3

So, If I understand what your telling me...a 25 point owner at beach club (banked and borrowed to get to 75 points) who transfered in 100 points from OKW, could use their 75 points at BCV at the 11-month window, and also 100 pts at OKW at the 11 month window (or a couple days after). If this is correct, what would the 11 month window for OKW be? Would it be my UY, or do the OKW points retain the UY of the original owner?

Also, under any circumstances, could the OKW pts be used to book BCV at the 11 month window?

One other question, can transferred points be banked into the next year? Thanks for all you help.

No, that's NOT what they are telling you. You would have the 11-month booking window at BCV only for the BCV points (banked, current, or borrowed).

The OKW points would have the 11-month window only at OKW. If you were going to use those points anywhere else, you'd have to wait until the 7-month window opens.

Jim, that may be what the rules say but has definitely not been the real world for some time now. It remains to be seen if it will ever change, I'm inclined to think it will not. The reality for the OP is that while they cannot count on it, it's likely they'd have 175 points to use at 11 months at BCV with banking and borrowing of the 25 pt contract.

Does UY affect transferred points and can transferred points be banked? Thanks again.
Transferred points can be banked and info suggests that the usual rules and percentages don't apply or are more relaxed that for regular points. They cannot be borrowed. The rules say the transferred points should retain their home resort and use year but they frequently assume the characteristics of the contract they are transferred in to including use year and home resort.

I probably did not word my earlier reply well, so I'll try again. I did NOT mean that you were trying to do anything improper. I just thought you misunderstood what Keisha said.

To answer this question, my answer above is the correct "book" answer. Transferred points are supposed to retain their home resort characteristics, and therefore -- NO, you would not ever be able to use OKW points to book BCV at the 11 month window. Regardless of where you transferred them, theoretically they would remain OKW points.

That's the "book" answer, but as Dean notes, the reality may be different from what the rule book says.

I asked about transferred points and how are those points treated. I was specifically told they retain their home resort and use year, so the morphing of points from say OKW to BCV is not likely to happen any longer.

They've always said that. Until people actually transfer the points and tell us what happened, we will not know any more than we did prior to the change.

Agreed.

However, now that there is only one transfer per use year allowed (and they are most definitely enforcing that), I believe it will be much, much easier for the CMs to look for and read the notes. I believe that DVC has recently emphasized to the CMs that they are to look for those notes and make sure that the transferred points are being used properly. So I think it will be very risky to plan on using transferred points to bypass the home resort booking rules.

My opinion. Others may not agree.

Best wishes -

I know, that before all this started in Aug, I could receive a transfer, even if the points had 2 weeks of life in them and the points took on my Home Resort and UY. I could bank them any time that I choose as long as I did it before my new UY started. I found this out by accident from Member Services. Some would give the book answer and then I found two that actually told me how it was working.

I think Carol brings up an excellent point. Prior to the enforcement of the transfer rule, tracking points on an account that may have had dozens of transfers in would have beeen a near impossibility unless the program was doing it, which it apparently wasn't designed to do...fast-forward to now and tracking one transfer is pretty quick and simple if one is well versed in the rules and policies of DVC. I tend to believe that the point morphing issue is much easier to get a handle on given the enforcement of the transfer restrictions.

Isn't there a rule that you cannot have more than three times your contract total in your account and any one time?

We discussed this recently. The rule seems specific to banking and borrowing and says that current allotted, banked and borrowed points cannot exceed 300%. It doesn't say you can't have more and it doesn't address transfers at all which are addressed in the very next section of the Multi site POS. Of course it could be changed.
