I purchased the early bird check in. Does that mean that SW will automatically check me in or do I still need to check in at the 24 hour mark prior to my flight?

If you purchased the Early Bird Check In, Southwest will 'check you in' and assign a boarding # to you at 36 hours prior to your departure. You can log on at 24 hours prior, and print your boarding passes.
