Had a student tell the front office that she gave me a check for her lunches. The secretary walked down and asked me if I had it on the desk, I said..."She said she gave me the check? The Principal did the morning attendance, I only got in at 10:30." The secretary said "that's what I thought"....(I sub at a small private school...and the principal really needed me to cover some classes).

I just love it when students try to cover their mistakes by trying to shift blame to adults. I am lucky that people know me, and know that I would never do something like taking a check...but I have a feeling my luck run out one day :duck: . I wish students would realize it is not a big deal to say...I forgot it. :headache:

As the yearbook advisor for my school, I get this ALL THE TIME. Students will come in swearing up one side and down the other that they paid for a yearbook...but there's no receipt, no copy of a receipt in the book, they can't produced a cancelled check...

Do you ever worry someone is going to accuse you of doing something wrong, or do you feel you are safe since you aren't guilty of running out and cashing checks?

Thanks for the post, at least I know i'm not alone...but I think parents would really be suprised.

I have been worried before when we've had students claiming they paid cash. My principal has been very good about standing behind me when that happens. I always make sure to receipt all money the morning I get it. When a student 'forgets' to bring it in the morning, I put it in my receipt book and ask my principal to lock it in the safe until I do my next day's receipts.

Anything else, we ask the parent to produce the cancelled check. Even it it doesn't say 'yearbook' on it, we would know if it was an amount for a yearbook as opposed to a field trip or something like that.

Thankfully, tomorrow is the last day for this year's sales...so the hassle will be over for another year!

We buy the yearbooks at the beginning of each new school year and we are never given a receipt. I get afraid they'll say we didn't pay one year. The bad thing is, the yearbooks aren't given out till the last day of school, so if you have to prove (getting a copy of the check from the bank) that you paid for it, having your classmates sign it would be out of the question because school would be out for the summer before you could prove it.

I wish we got receipts!

BTW, our school doesn't make a big deal if you forgot lunch money. They'll allow you to charge 2 lunches before you're cut off. We just send in random amounts thru out the year, so we're never really sure when they need money. I guess the lunch lady does tell them that their account is empty when they purchase the last lunch they have money for. There may be change in the account, just not enough for another lunch. Well, my kids forget to tell us pretty routinely that they need a check. LOL They normally charge the next day and by then, they normally remember to tell us that they've charged and need lunch money.

It just works out nice and no need for anyone to lie. The only thing is, you can't charge like the last 2 weeks of school or somewhere around that time anyway.

New policy at our school this year...........the payment goes directly to the yearbook company in a pre-paid envelope. No collecting at school and it adds the convenience of paying via credit card. They send the yearbook to the school with a list of kids to receive one which is organized by homeroom.

We never worry about whether students accuse us of losing their checks/cash for lunches or not. When we get a check, it goes directly into the computer under the students name and can be pulled up later under a list of transactions for that student. Same with cash. So if one of the kids comes to me and says "Well, but, I paid X$$ yesterday!" I can go to my boss's computer, pull it up and go "Oh no you didn't!" or "Well, yes you did but you had X$ charged to your account, so that's why you have little/no money in there now."
