We are getting our Satellite TV hooked up Friday. (Seems the be the better choice here, above cable)

I have a question for any experts out there.
The dish goes on the house, then the wiring is run inside, and the receiver box is also supposed to be hooked up to a phone line. right.

Well, in our living room there is only one phone jack. we have a splitter hooked up to it already, since this is where our computer, our phone, etc. are already hooked up.

Will this be a problem???
What will need done to hook up our Satellite TV?

Thanks!

You can just use another splitter to hook up all three to the same jack.

Thanks Charade, that was fassssst!!!

I am sitting here wondering....
Since the TV will not be right where the phone/computer/etc. is sitting, what about one of those wireless plug in things that you plug into your electrical outlet to create an extra phone jack?

Any idea if that would work?

I have had 3 different Sat. systems. Not one has been plugged into a phone jack. The installer did not even hook it up. They all had to hook it up just to install whatever they had to then unplugged it. They told me to hook it up if I wanted to order Pay Per View, but we never have. I guess it depends on your installer.

We have Dish Network, and they do charge a $5.99 service fee per box that is not connected to a phone line. I think they use the phone line to track purchases and update the operating system on your box...

You only need to have it plugged in if you have a certain type of box.

I have dish network basic model slim boxes. The only time i bother running a wire across to the living room is when i want to rent a movie on PPV. This type of box downloads from the satellite.

The newer DVR boxes and multi-TV boxes do have mandatory fees if you do not keep them plugged in.

Yup, Im running 2 Multi-TV DVR boxes and 1 HD box...

Okay, I am clearly stupid when it comes to this!!!

I have enother question.
Our Dish has been up and working great!
Okay, we hooked up the receiver box thru a wireless phone jack, to get rid of that long wire. And, Immediately our DSL goes out on the computer.

Do we need a different/better wireless phone jack system?

Any ideas???

Thanks again!

Dont even use a phone line to the dish.

I have direct tv for over 5 years and haven't even had a home phone line for over 3 years. The phone line is only so they can do upgrades overnight when needed and to let you purchase ppv through your remote. I always just purchase ppv through the internet and if you need them to do an upgrade just plug it in the 1 time for it to be done.

On DISH, the phone line is not used to download updates. That would take waaaaay to long. They download updates via the antenna. The phone line is used to order PPV and other interactive stuff.

I have a phone line hooked to my DISH receiver because it has caller ID which pops up on the TV when a call comes in. Very handy for a couch potato!

Hey Charade,

We have the set up where we are 'supposed' to have it hooked up to the phone line.

I think that our problem may be that this wireless system is several years old now! I don't think it can work with DSL at the same time, so our DSL is immediately knocked out when we plug it in. ??????????
