What is the going price per point? What do you base it on?

A friend wants to rent some points. I told them I thought the going rate was going to be around $10/per point and they just about had a heart attack. To me $10/per point for 4 days during the week is a good price. It would be at min. $360. for four days for four people in a studio. Am I right?

As the seller, you can ask whatever you want for the points. The "going rate" is determined by the market - a combination of what other sellers are willing to accept and what the pool of buyers is willing to pay.

It is my understanding the the market rate for DVC points is in the $10 to $12range for most normal situations.

Your "heart attack" comment is funny. If they truly balked at that cheap rate then they have no idea what they are doing. Have them rate check a reservation thru disney just at the equivilant disney property hotels for a true heart attack. :)

Thanks. I thought I was correct. We dont usually rent points. Usually we go a couple of times a year, but this year we haven't due to financial situations. Maybe we will just bank our points and wait for next year.

LOL - $10/point would be the cheapest end....up to about $13, which is still a steal compared to cash rates. If they're having heart attacks over $10/point then I think perhaps they should be in a value resort or offsite at Motel 6. People going to WDW need to be comfortable if they're thinking $360 for 4 nights is too ritzy, then they might as well find a $30-50/night place where they'll be around other people who think like them.

Damn, I'm trying to make this not sound offensive or judgemental towards them, but I'm failing. I'm really not criticizing them - but if they're not used to even paying $90/night for "resorts" then they might gripe about bell services not giving them a cart to use so they don't have to tip, gripe about $6 for a beer, etc. In other words, dvc would be wasted on them.

Well, tell them that the cost listed on Disney's website for a BWV studio during those dates is $325/night and see if he makes a miraculous recovery.

Not that there would be any availability there this late in the game but I think they would see the true value of $10/pt more clearly.

This is a bad idea. There are those that get it with timeshares and those that don't. It's almost impossible to educate someone in this situation then rent to them and have them be happy if they aren't at least open going in. 4 nights would be in the $1400 on cash without discounts and at best, around $1000 if they can find any discounts that would apply. Unless they beg you to rent to them and they truly seem to understand what they're getting, I would not do it. Plus, nothing is going to be available this year during that time on points in all likelihood anyway which is your best out.

For what it's worth, with the new promotions (buy 4 get 7 nights), they could pay $12/point for 4-nights in a DVC studio, or pay about the same amount and get 7 nights at a value resort.

$10/pt for what they are getting is a bargain. That will still cost more than a Motel 6 off-site, though.

They are paying for the convenience of being on the property and having access to EMH, ability to .

Or they can look at it like they are getting a "discount" on the Motel 6 room because they gave up the EMH.

There are some people who wouldn't be happy unless it was free. Can't help those....
