I know that there is always loads of questions on here regarding car hire in Orlando but i was just wondering if someone could clear up a few details.

1. If you hire a car through dollar and take our there platinum insurance do you still need to hand over your credit card as a security deposit when you collect the car and do they take anything of it?
2. If you don't need to swipe your credit card what do you leave as a security deposit?
3. Is it only if you book through a travel company i.e virgin, travel city that a credit card security deposit is not needed?
I am asking as in Dec we used Alamo and they asked for my credit card and took a small amount off until the car was returned.
It got me thinking What do people do if they don't have credit cards? Does it mean that they can't rent a car.

They do swipe your card, but nothing is taken off it. If you don't have a credit card there is usually a large cash deposit that has to be handed over.

If you take their Platinum cover you don't leave a card. If you dont take the cover and go with your own cover you have to leave a card.
I have booked thru Airnet, Virgin, Dollar and TCD all with Platinum cover not left a card for years now.
See this thread for a few more reponses recently.

sorry to sound completly stupid but does that mean that they don't ask for a credit card or they do but don't swipe it???

With their Platinum cover they do not ask to even see your credit card, just your driving licence.

Thanks for clearing that up. As i said in dec we booked car hire with alamo and when we arrived at Orlando they asked for my credit card which i gave them and to my horror it was declined!!! I knew there was plenty of money on it as i had hardly used it knowing it would be well used whilst we were on holiday. Anyway to cut a long story short i phoned master card from the car rental desk and they had put a stop on my card because that morning i had used my credit card to purchase something in manchester then flew onto Gatwick where i had also used my card t. Then of course we flew out of the country and into orlando where i used my card for my security deposit. The lady at master card was very helpful and said that the hold on my card was for security reasons and had it lifted once i answered a few security questions. My credit card was fine for the rest of the holiday but as you can imagine i went a very bright colour red when it was first declined..
