I just bought into DVC. I have 160 points and I have a December UY. Say next year I decide to go to the AKV in October and I use 60 points for that stay. I make that reservation and I have until July 31st to bank my points.
If I bank my points in July and then decide to go to WDW in August, can I then use some of those banked points?

No, once banked they stay in the next year. However, you can borrow points from your next year.

That happened to me this year. I banked my 2008 points to make a reservation in April 2009. I then decided to go to Disneyland in December, I had to borrow 2009.

Banking is a final transaction - banked points cannot be returned to their original use year, so no you could not use them for the August trip if you bank them in July.

However, you could borrow the points from the next use year for that August vacation.

For example, you get 160 points on 12/1/2008. You use 60 of them for an October 2009 stay at the AKV. You bank the rest before July 31.

So you now have no points to use for a vacation that would happen between 8/1/2009 and 11/30/2009.

But if you want to reserve a 100 point August 2009 vacation, then you could borrow 100 points from the 2009 use year.

So on 12/1/2009, you would have 60 points left to use in the 2009 use year (12/1/2009-11/30/2010). You could bank those 60 (if you did it before July 31, 2010) or you could use them for a vacation that would happen between 12/1/2009 and 11/30/2010. You also have 100 banked points (from 2008) that must be used by 11/30/2010 or they expire.

Thank you both for your replies. Not that I think that the scenerio would happen but you never know.
The more I learn about DVC, the happier I am that I made the move. You really do have a lot of flexability if you plan wisely...and I love to plan.
