Since there was a thread below about Netflix, I was wondering whether you save money doing this vs. going to the store?

We have a Blockbuster that's 5 miles away and a family owned video store 2 miles from us and with 2 small kids the idea of them coming to your house sounds convenient. I especially like the idea in the winter when driving is a pain and bundling kids up. Although in the summer do you use it as much as in the winter?

Thanks,
Tammy

We do blockbuster online, and yes it saves us money because we always seem to have late fees... this way if the kids want to watch something 50 times its no big rush to send it back, plus it is great with the movies coming to the house. Plus with blockbuster you do get emails each month with free rentals form the store, so if there is one close you can get additional movies.

Hope this helps

Laura

We have 5 small kids, and we use netflix constantly. We usually watch a movie as a family each friday, have one kids movie that they watch whenever, and one adult movie- sometimes it takes DH a long time to get to that one. We actually watch more movies in the summer, because my kids are too busy to watch TV diring the week during the school year. We seem to save money because we rarely BUY kids videos, now, and DH and I rarely go TO the movies. Turn around time for us is usually 2-3 days.

That is really awesome! Your post is what I wanted to hear. We are huge video buyers and I wanted to cut that out, but didn't know how. Now I know that if there's always a turnaround on rentals, that I don't need to buy. That way if there's a movie I really want, I can ask for it for birthday or Christmas.

Thanks,
Tammy

That sounds like a deal. Blockbuster is probably closer than 5 miles, but it can be a pain to get to. I'll have to go online and compare the two.

Thanks for your input!

Saving money for our huge 2008 trip to WDW!!!

Whether or not we save money in a given month is variable. In general, I'd say no, not because Netflix is more expensive but rather because without Netflix renting movies was far too much of a hassle so we hardly ever did it. With Netflix, we always have 3 discs ready to view. Sometimes, we watch a movie the day we get it and send it back the next morning. Other times, we've kept a disc for weeks. Obviously, that wasn't cost effective, but it sure was convenient.

When DD was younger and she was at that age where kids like to watch a movie over and over and over, we would get a disc from Netflix and keep it for a couple of weeks. When she got tired of it, we'd send it back and get something new.

So we spend more with Netflix, but the level of service and convenience is well worth it.

This sounds just like us. We cut out buying a lot of movies and now only buy the must haves for birthdays or such. I love Netflix simply for the fact that I dont have to take us all to the store only to be arguing because they each want 2 (including dad who never has time to watch them) and then have to deal with the late fees. This way they tell me what they want, I add it to the list, and there ya go.

I love Netflix, I've had it for 6 or 7 years now (I can't believe it's been around that long!) It has made renting movies so convenient - and I'd say that I spend less now, as far as entertainment - i.e. renting movies and going to them, not including time and gas.

I am able to get 4 movies, they grandfathered me in since I was an original subscriber. I'd never go to Blockbuster - it took them years to get with the program, and I appreciate that Netflix did this first. Plus, overall they have had excellent service. I don't buy too many movies anymore - but there are a few movies we have bought because we saw them on Netflix (Napolean Dynamite, and soon Arrested Development, etc.). I love being able to find interesting and fairly obscure movies and tv shows that you'd not find easily at a store.

Have you guys heard of CleanFilms? cleanfilms.com is very similar to Netflix but all the movies have had inappropriate scenes (nudity/sex) and bad language removed. The price is about the same, and you can have a 30 day free-trial. If three people sign up after you, then you can get a year membership for free. If three people sign up for the free trial you can get a year for 1/2 off! It is a great deal and we were excited to find a family friendly movie rental place, but I'm not sure we will benefit because we never find time!!!!! :earseek:

Thanks you for your responses! I signed up with Nexflix and will try it out. At least it will be helpful for the winter and if we don't see that it's working out we'll cancel. I signed up for the 3 dvd's at a time, so DH can have 1, I can have a romance or something and the kids can have 1.

Thanks again!
Tammy

I had Netflix for a couple years and was very happy with it.
We ended up switching to Blockbuster online shortly after getting an Xbox. You get 2 free in-store rental coupons each month that can be used for movies or games. With game rentals costing $7 each, the 2 free coupons basically make the online DVD service free for us.

Thanks for the heads up on game coupons. We don't have a system yet, as the kids are a little young and DH will get one in 5 months. That might come in handy. We'll keep Netflix until then.

Yeah, it's a decent deal even if you use them for movies. It's nice for those occasional times when you decide you want to see something right now instead of waiting for it in the mail. You figure $4.49 or whatever it is times 2. So you pay $15/month and get $9 in free rental coupons(or $16 if you use them for games)

We use Netflix and love it.

It is great not having to go to the video store and not be in a hurry to watch a movie by a certain date.

Try it, I think you will like it.

We save tons because DH was renting DVDs 3-4 times a week. At $4 a pop, we were forking out $15 or so every single week. We still get 3-4 movies a week but now we only pay $18 a month instead of $60 a month.

we got netflix for 6 months as a Christmas gift. Never used it before but I think we will like this. :teeth:

Now Netflix as a gift would be great! Enjoy!

So far we like our Netflix, but winter it'll be used more than later I think.

FYI - I don't mean to start a debate here - there's a thread on the Community Board about Clean Films. Their business model is to violate the copyright on each of the movies with their editing.

I love Netflix, especially the convenience. I've watched a lot more movies than when I had to go to the store to get them. Plus they have so much more available. I got a blockbuster card for Xmas and used it yesterday and they didnt have most of my Netflix list except for new stuff. I really like the availbitlity of TV on DVD and they have tons!

innocent question:

If it's illegal, how are they getting away with it?
