Another Neglected Child

NOT ONE OF 'MINE.' My nurse daughter just came in and said they had a baby at her hospital last night (she manages the emergency room). The mother left a two-year old watching the 6 month old in the tub. You know what happened. Marla said she made the baby a rattle out of a urine specimen cup and the tops of some blood tubes and the baby was holding it so she thinks the baby will be ok. When asked where the mother was, the paramedics said she was lying on the ground screaming so they left her there!!! She finally arrived at the hospital with her boyfriend and then left. She said she had gone out to buy groceries. The paramedics took the baby to another hospital. What the hell is wrong with people?

What an idiot! And to think I'm freaking out because I keep forgetting to let the water out of the tub in my guest bath that I drew before Wilma, just in case...and I have no little kids!

Isn't it just amazing how stupid/indifferent parents can be? This happens too often. Here on the DIS, despite our disagreements on what constitutes perfect parenting, I don't think any of us would leave our baby in an ER to go buy groceries

The worst case of misplaced priorities I can think of was a child who was shot in the head and the mom didn't come for HOURS. Her explanation when she finally showed was that she needed some things from WalMart. Um....Hellooooo, your son is having emergency brain surgery and you go to wallyworld? THe child was out of surgery in ICU when she finally got there.

Hopefully the baby will find a loving foster family.

Something similar just happened in my NEIGHBORHOOD! (I live in an apartment, but they aren't cheap. It is really a nice area, not trashy) A 2 year old was left watching an infant while the mothers boyfriend went to pick the mom up from work.

The 2 year old decided he needed to get something from the top of the stove, so he opened the oven door to use it as a step. The oven tipped over, suffocating the boy.

Parenting is HUGE responsibility, yet the only qualifications are biological.

Think of the spectrum of human traits...from the smartest person you know to the least bright; from the sweetest person you know to the meanest; from the most thoughtful person you know to the most thoughtless; from the most responsible person you know to the least responsible; from the calmest person you know to the most violent. All are "allowed" to have children and to be parents. Some kids get the bad ones. I'm going to ask God about this issue when I get to heaven.
