So we are moving to Ft. Lauderdale FL. DH got a great job oppurtunity down there and we are aiming for July 1st. I am not sure exactly where his office is in Ft. Lauderdale but it's only about 3-5 miles from the Las Olas area.

We are in our late 20's/early 30's with two cats and a dog. We do not have kids yet, but are hopping in early 2007 we will be blessed with a bundle of joy. We would probably rent a house/condo for at least the first 6 months. DH is going into the company on an executive level and will most probably have the oppurtunity to move again within the year if we desire.

Any suggestions on area's to look in? Anyone know someone with a house to rent or a condo to rent in the area? We have friends that live there and they are helping us a bit, but we would like to go down a weekend in June and find a place. We heard that the Victoria Park area is nice and has some SFH and condo's for rent in our price range. We are looking for at least a 2/1.5 for under $1500/month.

Any idea's on the job market in the area? I work for a major insurance company now and have no idea what I will do for work. I need to find something at least for the beginning, so I don't go crazy. My background is hospitatliy/restuarant/insurance and insurance legal. I have 0 desire to get into the restaurant/hotel scene, but would be interested in entry level in travel.

Thanks for the help!!! I can't wait to be closer to Mickey and in warm weather...

I am a bit more north of Ft. Lauderdale and don't get down that way too often.

But look over this paper, it's basically the Broward paper. You can look over rentals and job types.

Sun Sentinel

No Florida ideas, but good wishes.

Hope you have enjoyed your short time here in the Chicago area. :cool1: Try and make it to the June Chicago DIS meet, not sure if you have made it to any since you have been here, and time is running out. :hourglass :moped: Would love to see you there.

Thanks Dan! I should try and go to the meet! :)

I have checked out the Sun Sentinel. It's hard to know what area's are good without being there. Any ideas of areas to avoid or to look at?

I've been in SoFla 20 years now. The Victoria Park area is very nice, but quite pricey now (you could get places for a song back in 1985...). Your DH would have no commute to work.

I'd definitely look at the classifieds in the Sun-Sentinel. South Florida towns run right into each other, so there are a lot of towns for you to choose from. Generally speaking, older homes are in the east near the beach, newer homes in the west near the everglades. There was a wild housing price boom last year, but it's slowing down some, luckily for you.

We spent many years in Deerfield Beach, and loved the town, but it's a half-hour north of Fort Lauderdale.

Coral Springs is very nice and mostly a young area with lots of children.
Parkland is right next to Coral Springs and that is great too.
Plantation, Davie are also close and a little cheaper to live than Coral Springs.

A six month rental will be hard to find as most will only do 1 year leases. And I should mention the cost of housing in Southeast Florida is ridiculously out of whack and will not be cheap!

Good Luck with the move!!! And welcome to the Sunshine State! :sunny:

We would probably do a year lease... we have rented a lot to know that it's difficult to do less. I was just thinking, I am starting to feel like a military wife with all the moving.

We are from Boston and live in Chicago now. The cost of housing doesn't scare us... just seems normal!!!!

How well established is DH's company? Maybe they can give you some reliable contact names to help with rentals. Also, maybe if you use a rental agency they can help you find a 6 month lease.
