I keep reading that rental strollers aren't allowed on the train, for obvious reason--they don't fit. What about personal umbrella strollers that fold up?

Yes.

Any stroller is allowed aboard that can be folded, umbrella or regular.

They don't want non-folded strollers rolling around on the train.
