Background:

This was our fourth DCL cruise, third on the Magic. Sailing were, myself (on the lower 40 side), dh (also on the lower 40 side), and ds (16).

I will try and break it down so you can skip to parts you want to read about, and I will try and keep it all within this thread. I will warn you though: I don't mince words, if I found something offensive or distasteful, I will say so. No pixie dust here. :

Embarkation, or "How to cook a tourist in less than two hours"

Living on the West Coast definately merits a flight in day prior, so we booked our flights arriving Friday night. We were going to use Marriott points to stay at the new Residence Inn, however, with the fires in Orlando closing the roads intermittently, felt safer staying in Orlando for the night and driving to port in the morning. We still used Marriott points, but stayed at the Fairfield Inn. It was a nice hotel and offered a pretty good buffet in the morning. The buffet was very crowded and helped to prepare us for the crowds to come.
Since dh travels so much with work, we also had a free Avis rental and preferred membership, so picking the car up Friday night was a breeze.
We drove to port about 9:30, stopped at the grocery store for a few items, dropped off the rental car and took the Avis shuttle to port-arriving about 10:45. Check in was a breeze as well since we are Castaway Club members. We ended up with boarding number 5, which if you have read the others trips reports you know this ended up meaning zilch in the long run.
We had quite a good gathering of Dis-ers at the model ship, and since quite a few of us were wearing bright green, we had people timidly approach and ask if we were with the Dis boards. :)
Well as you already read, they evacuated the building and we were sent over to the far end of the parking lot to bake for a couple of hours until they could clear the building. On the plus side, this gave us some time to get to know some more of the people we would be sailing with for the next week.

Overall impressions: Since I have sailed Disney before, I know how painless embarkation can be. I don't hold it against Disney, they were being safe. That said, this is Disney and they could at least have covered areas in their parking lot and serve cold water instead of warm water to baking tourists! The part that got me was the couple that demanded, and I mean demanded that the cast members let them on the ship! They even strode up to the security and demanded it. How can some people be so full of themselves?

Stay tuned for Ports: "wet and wild days"...

Lisa

We have been to these ports before, but in staying with my creedo of "I want to try new things", we did some excursions I would never have booked before. Some of them ended up being the highlight of our trip.

Key West:

We knew this is an easy port to navigate so just got off the ship and did our own thing. First we went to the Pirate Soul museum. I was very thankful for the two for one coupons because I would have been highly :furious: if I had to pay full price! The only really interesting part is the cell that you go in. They have you put on earphones and then they darken the room (and I mean dark ) What happens is a recording starts and it is a reenactment of a pirate mutiny. The spooky thing is: you can actually feel the breath of the captain on your neck. I swear I thought someone was going to reach out and grab me during one chase part (clean up, aisle two please). :)

After shelling out money...or should I say "loot" for pictures and assorted pirate gear, we headed to the Blonde Giraffe for key lime pie on a stick. Then we decided to take the conch train tour and see if they changed anything up. Well, Key West is definately better than Disney at changing their entertainment, because the conch train tour was much different this time and much more informative. (check out my review of "entertainment" to get that comment). Ds spent most of the tour doing neck exercises though (read: sleeping) so I would say it wasn't a big hit for him. After the tour we headed back to the ship and once again, the phantom teenager disappeared in a swirl of mist. It seems that the Stack (the teen club) has a magical power to make teenagers disappear for long periods of time (more on that later). One of the only pictures I have of my son (to prove he was with us) was on the conch train tour.

Grand Caymen

We had booked the Thriller sand and sea adventure, which is a new excursion offered by Disney. There were only 6 other Disney people on the boat with us. The other 6 were from the Carnival ship. The Thriller Jet boat is 55 feet long with 900 horsepower. Let's just say that at 55 mph, jumping waves along the coast of Grand Caymen, ds was not sleeping through this excursion! We all had a blast! Our driver was John from South Africa and he was a hoot. Before he dropped us at Sea Grape beach he explained what "sand" really is. Let's just say it is something about the digestive process of the parrot fish. :rotfl2: We got to spend a couple of hours at the beach and then we raced back along shore for a bit then headed back to shore. John told us that we had the misfortune to pick a day with beautiful weather (read: no waves to jump). Darn it Disney can't you change the weather in port to accomodate these excursions? :teeth: I have to say, and both dh and ds agree; this excursion was the highlight of our trip.
Note that you will get WET on this trip. :)

Cozumel:
We booked the Fury Catamarn and snorkel trip because i wasn't too sure what the extent of the damage to Coz was. It was worse than I thought. Most of the vegetation is gone, buildings are still crumbled, the reef was stripped. It is very sad, but glad the cruise ships are going back to help with the economy there. The excursion was fun, but I don't like to snorkle in rough water and the current was so bad that people were being sucked under the catamaran. I am not a strong enough swimmer, so I stayed on the boat. The beach they took us to was covered in sticks and coral and not soft at all. Ds rented an ATV for $20 and enjoyed his beach day that way. Overall, I wished I had stayed on board or taken the Tropical Jeep tour again.

Castaway Cay:

Ok, I know I said in the Grand Caymen part I wanted Disney to control the weather-fully knowing that they cannot-but my main disappointment came at CC. I was so looking forward to parasailing and was psyching myself up for weeks to do it, and then because of choppy seas and wind, they cancelled excursions up to 2:30 pm. Mine was at 1:30! :( Ok, I know, wah wah...I still got to spend the day at CC. The weather turned out beautiful, despite the rain storm that blew through in the am. It was very hot and humid though and by 2:00 I was on the ship and looking for my ds. Yes, ds had disappeared again, this time to the teen beach. The fact that Disney has a seperate beach for teens, one for families, and one for adults is something that has brought us back four times. Everyone can do their own thing.

Stay tuned for Food, meals and much more....

I've read all the 5/6 reports and am enjoying them all. They all have something a little different. This is the time of year we are going next year, so glad everyone is posting! Can't wait to hear the rest of your report!

What you said about having only 1 photo made me crack up! I can sooooo relate! We were on the April 22 Magic and I took 42 pictures. DS 10 is in 25 and DS 13 is only in 1 :rotfl2:

Good thing I forced him to do some of the lifestyle portraits!

Thanks for your report - sounds like we got back before the humidity rolled in.

Hey!

Glad to see you all made home safely and are getting back into the swing of things!

We had a great time meeting you and I can't wait for the rest of your report!

Thankyou for your report.Where do you rent the ATVs? :moped:

They were available at the beach that we went to. Only Fury Catamaran people went to this beach, so I am not sure which beach it is?

 Ditto! We enjoyed dining with you and hubby. I was dreading having a table for four as I talk with dh and ds every day, so was very glad when you all moved over. :)

Food, servers, meals and more!

Let me preface this part by saying that i am an extremely picky eater and the last few times we cruised I had a hard time selecting anything that I would eat. This time there were several nights I could find something, of course when all the menus contained beef tenderloin, chicken, steak or a fish, it makes it pretty easy as long as you like one of those. To say that Disney lacks variety in their menus is an understatement. The buffets for breakfast never varied and the gala menus (ie. the Captains gala, Til we meet again etc.) were much the same as the last 3 times we cruised. Glad they kept the choclate lava cake though!

I am not one of those people that can remember every meal I ate while on the cruise either, so just suffice to say that I never went hungry. :teeth:

The difference this time was that dh and I decided to try the much touted Palo. The only ressie I could get was for dinner on thursday at 6 pm. Now, dh and I are not fancy people, but can hold our own in five star resteraunts. Both of us were very uncomfortable in Palo. I am not sure why, maybe the fact that the server "hovered" over us, or that the sun beating in the window (we had great seats though) was turning me medium well, but I could not relax. I will say that the choclitini that I had was most excellent and my new favorite drink. The food was on par with the dining rooms. so not sure what all the hype is about?? I did try the chocolate souffle and thought it "ok". Certainly not "to die for". I much prefer the chocolate lava cake on the Captain's Gala menu. So flame me if you must, I think Palo is highly overrated and wouldn't waste my money on it again.

Our servers in the main dining rooms were great. They started out rough the first few nights and we had to leave before dessert in order to make a show or some other event. But by Tuesday, they hit their stride and we really liked them. We had Ritesh from India and Claudio from Chile. I will note here that this is the first cruise where we actually tipped the Head Server. I know, everyone gasp...we never felt the need before because we never saw them. This time, Ronald from England, was the Head Server and he was very visible every night, helped us rework the seating arrangements so that fellow Dis-ers could sit with us, and came by to check if everything was ok nightly.
Ritesh always brought the five of us an extra dessert to try, and on Captains Gala/Palo night, dh and I "double dipped" so he could have more lobster (I hear that gasping again), well I did not feel like eating more (except the chocolate lava cake) but Ritesh would have none of that and brought me a bowl of noodles and chicken. :) So between having "excellent" servers and wonderful tablemates, we really enjoyed our dining experience this time.

Stay tuned for Entertainment or "How many times can you watch the same show?"

Entertainment or "How many times can you watch the same show?"

I was excited that at least this time there would be two new stage shows (Twice Charmed and The Golden Mickeys), but noticed right off that they still have the same cabaret acts. This is Disney right? Aren't they all about entertainment? Then why in the blazes can't they change up the entertainment periodically? It is pitiful to go into a cabarat act and sit there and quote them verbatim because you saw the same show three years ago . What I can't get over is how Rich Purpura and Michael Harrison continue to do the same routine week after week, month after month, ad nauseum. Mix it up folks!

Now as for the stage shows: I liked Golden Mickeys, only because I like the songs that they did. Twice Charmed put me to sleep. The songs were boring and the "acting" (such that it is) was forced. The effects were rather cheesy and they had numerous technical difficulties. I noticed this with the Pirates party as well. Which brings me to another much hyped part of the cruise:
Pirates in the Caribbean party. I am sorry but this was a repeat of the sailaway party with a pirate or two thrown in. Same songs basically and just a bunch of dancing. Booooorrrring... :bored:
The fireworks were nice (on par with what we see here during baseball games), but I was so sick of people pushing in front of me and being rude, that I couldn't enjoy them much.

Which segways me into my next section: Stay tuned for...
Fellow cruisers or "I didn't know your last name was Disney"

Lisa

Hi Lisa!
Ronald was our head server too and we thought he was very good also. I also share your view of the menu- I badly wanted to eat something besides chicken, fish or steak!
I started asking for baked potaoes and extra desserts because that's all I wanted to eat :)

Fellow Cruisers or "I didn't know your last name was Disney"

I know my title sounds snotty, it's meant to be funny. I can honestly say that 95% of the people we came in contact with on this cruise were absolutely wonderful and made our cruise! It is that 5% that merit a warning. In four times on Disney, this is the first time I noticed out of control little kids everywhere . DH thinks that less and less people put their kids in the clubs, I don't know...I surmise it is the coca cola and donut diet that I saw so many kids enjoying. I understand it is vacation, but people, do NOT feed your children coca cola, chocolate milk and donuts for breakfast and then expect them to behave! Seriously, I witnessed this several times and the mother had the nerve to yell at the kid for kicking her accidentally because he was on a major sugar high!
One day we were sitting by the pool and this poor child comes crying out of the pool holding his nose which is bleeding profusely and the mother just laid there on her chaise and told him to not block her sun!!! I am not kidding! I was livid! The father finally came over and attended to the little boy.
We were trying to watch the sailaway party up on deck 10 and this lady just shoves (literally) one of the cast members out of the way and steps in front of my son to film the fesitivities. I went to stand up and let her know that was unacceptable, but dh restrained me. :rolleyes1 What can I say? I am full blooded German with a hot temper. It wasn't so much just her that pushed her way in either, she brought along three of her companions along with beer glasses and the like. It was when she went to light up a cigarette that I looked over at hubby and got the A-ok to light into her. :chat: Honest, I was very polite. :teeth:
We stayed on deck seven and were continually awoke to the sounds of little feet stomping down the hallway and children screaming.
Our neighbors to the one side always picked the time we were on our veranda to come out and smoke and yell at each other.
But enough of the bad....like I said, the majority of the cruisers were wonderful and I enjoyed being able to see some of the same people throughout the cruise. It just irritates me that people get that "It's all about me" attitude. Unfortunately it isn't exclusive to the cruise.:(

Stay tuned for Summing it up....Finally! :)

Lisa

Thanks for the report. I was on the same cruise. I am surprised at your PAlo review. I did though think the brunch was better than dinner:)
Sorry you ran into rude people, they are everywhere.

Heather

Thanks for writing your trip report. We worried about having smoking neighbors when we sailed but we were fortunate to not. However we've stayed at WDW a few times in non-smoking rooms and had smokers outside our doorway (technically outside their own doors) smoking and it comes into our room thru the vents. Ugh. But at least they weren't smoking in their rooms.

I loved that Topsiders had fruit available for breakfast so that the little ones could have something a bit more healthy than just a donut and coke for breakfast :) The entertainment folks often made jokes about the free soda machine - my boys still laugh about that. My 9 y.o. says the highlight of the trip for him was all the pizza and soda he could have!

Loved your "no pixie dust report"! You showed much more restraint than I would have on Pirate Night!

Kelly

Hi Lisa! It was fun to meet my fellow Washingtonian! We also had a fabulous head server that made his presence every night and even brought us a special dish of authentic curry one night - fabulous! :)

there were plenty of rude people on the ship. I especially noticed it during the shows. I got pretty flamed :furious: one night when a small group of adults (not even with kids!) saved the whole first THREE ROWS! I only had 2 little girls with me (DD and DNeice) and only needed 3 seats. When I asked about 3 seats I was rudely told they were ALL taken. When I told the girls "sorry, they are saving those seats for someone else" - the rude people said very rudely - we are not SAVING those seats, those people are here! Whatever.

All in all, we had a great time since this was our first cruise with DCL. We did not however rebook.

Our room on deck 2 was VERY quiet. We never heard any noise or any kids at all. It was perfect. :thumbsup2
Heather

I am glad everyone is enjoying the report and don't mind my candor. :)

Heather: it was great to meet you, only wish we could have bumped into each other during the week. I saw Sneezy (Melissa) like everywhere I went, but I never caught up with you again. :( Glad you made it back to our wonderful state...it is 98 degrees here today!
