Another live trip report...

Thanks GP!
Kat4disney, it was probably a long shot to run into each other; but stranger things have happened! A lot of the rides you list we haven't even done yet. We've got two full days left, tomorrow will probably be MK all day to finish up the still-undone things, then maybe DHS in the morning then Epcot then Downtown. The real world is starting to loom large for us... but not yet! And I don't blame you about the cinnamon roll - my first one, I bought close to 1am that first night, ate half there, and half when I got to my hotel room. With the last three I bought, they finished off a plate and the woman serving scooped big piles of the frosting/glaze and dumped it on ours. The single one was swimming in about 1/4" deep glaze! It was unreal! Tomorrow morning, we have a tiny bit of leftover apple turnover, a little bit of coffee cake, and a huge apple danish that I bought from a cart in Epcot - different than most other places that sell danishes. I love danishes; I remember when I was in my teens, WDW had the best danishes ever, totally unlike what you get today. Now they're OK but nothing like before.

We had a good day today... ate some more Main St Bakery stuff in our room then had a late start at Epcot - didn't get there until almost 11. The marathoners were out, in fact some were done and hopping on buses to leave. They had the World Showcase torches lit and the Illuminations globe was out and spinning and occasionally showing a generic type of light show on its LCD screens.

We stopped briefly into Club Cool and I gave Leila a glass of Beverly. She made a puss but she did drink some more!]

We picked up a Kim Possible game, then stopped into Mexico so Jack could ride Gran Fiesta Tour again, which has strangely become one of his favorite rides. There was no wait, and we were on to Norway to pick up the Kimmunicator. After all this time, there are still bugs with it, with the phone occasionally locking up and rebooting, losing audio, demanded to be returned, and so on. Kind of frustrating. Also, if you leave it for a little while, it will start vibrating and playing the KP "doo, doo, doo-doo!" song - a bit distracting when you watching a show that asks cell phones to be silenced! All that, and Kim Possible, last I checked, isn't even being broadcast any longer! DHS stopped like KP appearances at least a year ago, I think. I would not be surprised to see it rebranded as a Phineas and Ferb "Agent P" game before long.

Anyway, we did that for a bit and ate lunch at Biergarten. Now, last time we were there (2-3 years ago), it was a pretty gruesome day all around - Jack managed to get his hand stuck inside the slats of his chair, necessitating using butter to grease it back out, and shortly afterwards, I picked up the virus that Mrs and Jack had had a few days early, and spent all night emptying my stomach. Yet, I had remembered that the food was pretty good, so we gave it another shot. I'm very glad we did - there's lots of very yummy stuff there, and by the time we were finished, I could barely walk, since I was so full of good food. The stage show is a lot of fun, too. The only problem was that we were charged for a dinner meal. I thought it seemed a bit high, and checking the sign when we left, I saw that we were charged the dinner rate instead of the lunch rate. Turns out it was our server's first day out of training and she was very apologetic. It ended up saving us $30 (after DVC discount, no less), so I'm glad I checked!

While we were in Germany, Leila was in the stroller and managed to grab a plush (or "fluffy toy" as Jack calls them) cat and fell totally in love with it instantly, hugging it and patting its head and so on. She was so cute (and so resistant to us putting it back!) that we decided that it was her present for this trip - and it more than wiped out the $30 I saved at Biergarten!

We walked through the new Wurthers store there (I'm too lazy to look up the exact spelling right now!) - I don't care for caramel but still, it sure did smell yummy in there!

After doing the KP game in Germany, we went back to Mexico to do that pavilion's game. On the way, we managed to catch the Chinese acrobats, just a couple minutes before the show began - another exactly of the good timing we've been having most of this trip.

Outside the Mexico pavilion, there were a couple cast members hanging out near the entrance, and my wife mentioned something to them about this being his favorite ride. Next thing you know, we're getting whisked away, given the usual bunch of Mickey stickers, and a "Magical Moment" postcard with his name and the signatures of "big six" characters on the back. We're taken to the front of the line (yes, there actually was a decent-length line at this point) and given our own boat. Now, it would be churlish to mention that when we rode it that morning, we had our own boat then, too, so I won't mention that. :) It was a cute "moment" and Jack appreciated it, even though I think he was more interested in continuing on with the KP game.

Back to China, watched the 360' movie there, on to Italy then American Adventure and caught the amazing show there. One last KP game in Japan, then found a pretty decent spot for Illuminations, did a few tripod shots on the way out, and back to the hotel.

At the hotel, we had a good lineup of animals... three ankole cattle resting (they are there a lot), a very near giraffe, and a zebra. I grabbed the tripod and did some long-exposure shots. Here's one with very minor post-processing... 100 second exposure. You can see the cattle, two zebra, and possibly some giraffe in the background.

Yes, should have arranged a specific time to say hi. I spent a fair amount of that day wandering around in shock at how busy it was!! Not at all what I was expecting.

And I agree with you on Danish. Today's are almost cardboard like compared to years ago. :sad2:

Yes, it was very busy. Crowds have been inconsistent but generally fairly busy for this trip. I saw 180 minutes for one ride at some point! (I think it was either Toy Story Mania or Rock 'n Rollercoaster.) Epcot was not too busy yesterday and neither was MK today.

Today was a pretty good day, but very stupid from a photographic and weather viewpoint. I checked the weather in the morning and saw 79' on one site and 81' on another, so I threw on one of my few pairs of shorts. The forecast said 40% chance of rain in the afternoon. Yet, as we were leaving, I looked at the pile of M42 lenses and thought "gee, I haven't carried around those much yet" so promptly pulled most of my modern lenses out and put in the old ones. As soon as we got to MK and saw the gray, foreboding skies, I was realizing that I, Mr Loves-Weathersealing, left my weathersealed lenses in the room! Well, sure enough, it started raining pretty hard after lunch and I just had to keep it tucked under my jacket. Still, I was annoyed at myself - trying to protect the camera in the rain instead of letting it hang out proudly! And potentially missing some rain photos. For shame!

All in all, a pretty good day. Leila got her first haircut and despite being a brat just before, was well-behaved during it. We hit most of the stuff we wanted to before the trip was over, including a final visit to Toontown. (Leila ran up to Minnie and gave her a big hug; she really loves Mickey & Minnie!) We took off at the beginning of MSEP and went to Downtown Disney, did a little wandering and ate at T-Rex, which is one of Jack's favorites.

Now we're back in our room and I'm emptying memory cards (today being the first day I didn't use the 32g card, so I've got 2 1/2 cards to clear - tomorrow, back to the 32g!) then hitting the sack. It's our penultimate night...

Just an update... we're all back home now safe and sound.

Our final full day (yesterday) was mainly a "mop-up" day. We hit DHS in the morning and thanks to low crowds, I was able to ride ToT and RnRC with <20 minute waits, at about 10am. Toy Story Mania was already at a 60 minute wait, though. We got fastpasses but didn't stick around long enough to use them, so gifted them to another family.

On RnRC, I ended up in the front row through no special effort... so I have a couple front-row shots, and yes, I do actually have on-ride photos from RnRC! Unfortunately I used only ISO 6400 so the shutter speeds are pretty low (1/8th to 1/15th or so) but they are what they are - when was the last time you saw on-ride shots from RnRC? :teeth:

While on our way to watch Indy, Todd H saw me walking by and we finally had more than a couple seconds to say talk. He is a real nice guy and it was fun to meet him - even if he is a Canon shooter. ;) :lmao:

After Indy, we made a quick run through One Man's Dream and Mrs and I debated about if one change was really a change or if it was always that way. (A miniature cabin that Walt built; I thought that there used to be a different miniature that he built there.) Then it was onto a boat for Epcot...

At Epcot, we primarily finished the Kim Possible game. There were still more bugs, like the GPS not realizing that we were where we were supposed to be, forcing us to skip the scene. Someone else was playing soon after and had the same problem, except that their phone locked up then rebooted then couldn't tell where they were. I hope that if they do retheme this, they iron out some of these bugs!

We hadn't eaten lunch when we got to Epcot so before Kim, though, we had to find somewhere to eat. Much to Mrs Groucho's frustration, I'm a meat-n-potatoes kind of guy - I tend to not like too much exotic stuff. This means that there's virtually no counter-service World Showcase restaurants that I can find anything to order at. This is not the case for the sit-downs, so we tried a couple to see how the waits were. As a total long-shot, we asked the greeter at Le Cellier... and they said that they could take us immediately. Sure enough, just a few minutes later, we were sitting in our seat. On the way, I heard another greeter tell someone that there were completely booked and they couldn't even wait. I guess we had good timing!

After we finished up Kim, Jack did not want to watch Illuminations again (plus it was getting cold fast), so we hit Test Track and Spaceship Earth on our way out then stopped by our room. The kids went to sleep and Mrs started packing while I ran to Downtown Disney to pick up some last-minute gifts for some folks back home and walk through Art of Disney, as we hadn't had time yet. (Funnily enough, despite the long length of the trip, there was still a bunch of stuff that we didn't get a chance to do.)

This morning, it took long enough to finish packing that there was no way that we'd have time to stop by MK at all, so we took our time then stopped by Mara for breakfast, with all of us taking the long walk back to Kidani for our Magical Express bus. The trip back was pretty uneventful. The flight was about half an hour late - not too bad consider the debacle of our flight down there, and the flight itself was smooth and the kids were well-behaved (phew).

Now, back to the real world... I still need to finish up some photos from a wedding then I'll get started on the thousands (and thousands) of shots from this trip! I think there should be some good ones in there though; I'm looking forward to going through them.

I haven't decided yet if I'm going to update this thread or start a new one over on the Trip Reports board. I'll update this thread either way.

Welcome back and thanks for the lovely, play by play, live trip report. I'm sure we are all looking forward to seeing your pictures. :thumbsup2

I guess the only thing that makes coming home from a Disney trip a little bearable is that thought that before you know it you'll be back.

I have booked a trip for June 10th to the 20th at Beach Club and I'm struck by the realization that each time we have gone back, my son, now 12, is ready to take it up another notch and embrace things that he wasn't interested in doing before. I feel like I am on the same page as DS because I am open to new things as well. Going with your kids as they progress through the various ages really keeps Disney fresh for everyone in the family. I feel fortunate to be at the parent stage in life, especially because kids can take us on such a fun ride through childhood again.

Thank you so much for putting a wag in our tails with your trip updates!

Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed the live TR. Hopefully I'll get a chance to start going through some of the photos this weekend... I don't have a final count yet but this is easily the most shots I've taken on a trip.

I've got no new trips planned at this point. We need to let our DVC points "charge up" again a little, and I really want to get our to California again soon to see friends and also check out Cars Land, World of Color, and the rest of the DCA updates - though I know that it was be very crowded for a while, but maybe some time in 2012... However, my newly-married sister-in-law (whose photos need to be finished before I start on the trip photos!) wants to go back with us again, maybe in 2012 or 2013, so that might be our next WDW trip. I've said that I have no plans but I can always be talked into it. :teeth:

I will add to my earlier DSLR report - Olympus fans will be happy to know that when I finally did an Oly DSLR, it was actually being used by the pro photographers taking photos of the kid's marathon - an E-3 with a flash bracket. I did see one or two later in the trip, and a couple more Pentaxes, but Sonys easily outnumbered both - of course, most were the entry-level ones, but the same could be said of the C/N models. There were a fair number of D700s, though. A few big Canons but only a couple "big white" lenses, fewer than I've seen in previous trips.

Overall, we had a really nice trip. Kidani Village at AKL is beautiful, probably more so than even the main Jambo House building. Jambo is overwhelmingly over-the-top, Kidani is much more intimate. However, it is a pain not having a food court onsite... and of course, either one is a long bus ride to pretty much anywhere except AK. I'm quite happy with it though, and would happily stay there again.

Speaking of buses, we had some great luck with timing. I don't think we ever waited more than five minutes for a bus. Most waits were only a couple minutes, and often the bus would pull up as we'd get there or be there waiting. I'm not sure how much of that was good bus service and how much was luck, but it worked out very well regardless.

Oh, and it was a real bummer getting in my car the morning after we got back and seeing 10 degrees on the thermometer! Brrrr!
