I am an Android user but I'd really like to get an iPhone. I started running and my iTouch is nice, but I'd like to have a phone with me in case of emergency. I'm ready to make the switch, but I have a couple requirements and I'm looking for help:thumbsup2.

First, I want to try to consolidate my iTouch on to the iPhone. I have a 64GB iTouch with about 27GB used on it. I have several movies, but I don't plan on keeping them on the phone. I will only move them onto the phone when we take our road trips. Is this fairly easy?

Second...apps...I don't have a lot but I'm wondering how much storage they require. I want to keep Netflix, MyFitnessPal, Gas Buddy and a few more apps on the phone.

Third...music...I don't have a huge library (compared to most of my friends) and I'm mostly interested in keeping my running playlists which total about 75 songs.

Finally...contacts...my entire phone book is in my phone. I have no idea how much memory this takes up and I would have to transfer all of them to my new phone. I think I have about 70 numbers stored right now.

I am on the Sprint network (which I cannot change) and there is no 4G/4G LTE coverage in my area. Because of this, I do not see a huge reason to get the iPhone 5. I'm not interested in the bigger/better display so I would think that the 4S would be a better choice since it is cheaper and compatible with our home docks/chargers, etc. Am I missing something here?

Now, let's talk capacity... I can get a 16GB 4S at Best Buy for $50. I would have to drive about 60 miles to get a 32BG 4S for $150. Based on the information I listed above regarding what I'd like to use it for, will I need the 32GB or will I be able to do OK with the 16GB? I will definitely need the contacts and the music on the phone. The movies are optional (but desired) and I'd like to have some space leftover for a few apps, particularly Netflix.

So all you iPhone users, what should I do:confused3? Will I be OK with the 16GB or is that just not going to cut it? I'm all about the instant gratification so if the 16GB will suffice, I'll go out and get it tomorrow. But if I'm really going to NEED the 32GB, then I guess I'll have to wait and hope that they get one in stock at my local Best Buy before the $50 off promo ends.

I have a 4S, 32 GB. I have about 300 songs or so on my phone and they take up the most space, but I have AT LEAST half, if not more of my space free. I have a bunch of apps as well (maybe 30-40). I have no idea how easy it is to transfer from itouch to iphone but I assume you sync the itouch to your itunes on the computer. You sync the iphone that way as well, so you should be able to sync all three things together. It shouldn't be a problem switching your contacts over and it won't take up much space at all. I have no idea how big a movie file is so I can't point you in the direction of whether 32 or 16 GB is better but I know you'll have plenty of space either way you go.

Why can't you do the same with your Android? I have a Droid Razr M and I have my whole playlist on it....I use it when I work out.

I could, but I'm actually getting quite fed up with my current phone. I have an Epic 4G and I've gone through two batteries with it already because it can't seem to hold a charge. It will go from 50% to dead and shut itself off within a matter of 20 minutes. The touchscreen is also starting to give me troubles...locking up or turning on when I'm on the phone (causing me to inadvertantly hang up on whomever I'm talking to)...and I'm really just getting sick of it. I was due for an upgrade back in November and that is when I started looking at my options.

I am a Sprint person. I had an Epic 4G and moved to an iPhone 4. I hated my 4G with a passion, it constantly froze, dropped calls and shut off randomly. My iPhone has worked flawlessly over the past 8 months and I am so glad I switched.

I also have an iPod Touch. My iPod is 64GB and my iPhone is 8GB. I do watch what I put on my iPhone because it has so much less space, I have about 150 songs on there and five screens worth of apps (including MyFitnessPal, Netflix and GasBuddy). And that only has used up 4GB.

I manually manage apps and music via iTunes and pick what I want on my iPhone. I keep everything on my iPod. Very easy to do.

When I switched phones I just manually typed in all my contacts from the Epic 4G to the iPhone 4. There may be a way to transfer them, especially if you do an upgrade in store. I bought my iPhone online (I wasn't due for an upgrade) and then switched phones with a telephone call to Sprint.

Personally, I think 16GB would be fine, but everyone is different. You can see how big app files are in the app store. MyFitnessPal is 19.8MB, Netflix is 22.2MB and GasBuddy is 7.6MB. (1,024 MB=1GB)

PS - On the subject of how big movie files are, they are big. An example is Brave (had to pick a Disney movie :goodvibes) in HD it is 3.38GB and in standard def it is 1.47GB.

Yes, it is easy to transfer movies on and off of the iPhone and iPod when you manually manage your files via iTunes. Here is Apple's directions on how to do that http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1535

:worship::worship::worship:Thank you!!! This is exactly the information I was looking for. I know that the movies are just under 1GB each. It sounds like you have similar content to what I am looking to put on my phone. If you're only using 4GB, then a 16GB phone would still allow room for me to put at least 10 movies on it! I really only want to put my POTC movies on the phone. The rest of the movies are animated Disney movies that my kids watch. I can just leave them on the iTouch for the kids.

I think this really seals my decision...but I'm still interested in anybody else's input:love:.

You might be able to make do with a 16gb. I would definitely go with the 32 though. I have a 16gb right now, and I hate it. When I upgrade in April, it will definitely be to a 32. To put the storage in perspective, I have my music library, which is much bigger than yours, about 950 songs, 4 kindle books, about 35 apps, my contacts and my photos, and my storage is gone. I have to take off apps to add a movie if I'm traveling. I'm on my 3rd iPhone, currently a 4s, and it's the only iPhone I've ever had that I don't like. I never had any problem at all with my 3g or 3gs. The 4s is pretty buggy. The battery life is horrible. This phone has actually been totally replaced once by Apple under warranty. Most of the problems with this phone are supposed to have been fixed with the 5. I do understand wanting to keep your current chargers though. As far as switching everything over from your iTouch to the iPhone, it should be super easy. Just plug it into your computer and upload everything from iTunes. Also, your contacts should transfer when you put your SIM card from your old phone into your new iPhone. I'm an AT&T person, but I believe Sprint still uses SIM cards...

I agree with going to the 32G. I have a 16G which works for me but I don't have any movies on it. I do have a lot of pictures and videos. I also have about 40 apps. Music I have about 200 songs and I have some books. Right now I am at 92% full.

I would go with the 32gb. One of the major disadvantages of Apple products is you can't expand the memory the way you can with an Android phone. If later you find out 16 isn't enough your only option is to get a new phone.

And look at what you're saying, you're using 27 already just having fun on your iTouch and you want to drop down to 60% of that? Sure you can take some of that stuff off if you want but if you're paying money to have a shiny new device it might as well be fun, particularly for the same price in this case.

I'm now completely confused...

I went on my computer and synced up my iPod. Under "Summary", it shows that I have 1.62GB Audio, 21.5GB Video and 25.1 GB of "Other" with 9.9GB Free. On my iPod itself, under "Settings", the "Usage" shows 25.0GB used and 33.0GB available.

So which is it?:confused3 Do I have 10GB available or 33GB???

According to the settings on my iPod, I have 21.5GB of video (so that is consistent) 1.6 GB of Music (that is also the same) and then I have a total of 29 apps (Totalling 1116.8 MB...so that's 1.2GB roughly?). Those things added together seem to total the 25 GB.

What's the discrepancy and how do I fix it? I obviously have something I don't need....like 15GB worth of "something"...HELP! I'm so clueless!

Oh, and FWIW, the video that I would put on the new phone totals 10GB and my music is less than 1GB so I should be fine with the 16GB:cheer2:.

There's your running system and factory installed things that you can't get rid of for any reason. On a 16gb iPhone, you'll only ever have 13.5gb of available space. That accounts for some of the discrepancy. With a 32gb phone though if you have 25gb of stuff installed, then that leaves you with 7gb free. At least 3.5 of those are taken up by your operating system and standard apps. You should only be left with 3.5gb of free space...

Personally, I would look into an android that you can swap the micro sd card out for a larger one. My mom had a 2G micro sd in her Galaxy S. For about 6 months she's been complaining that it keeps telling her she's out of room. While taking pictures off her phone and putting them on her computer, I found that her card was only 2G. I had an extra 8G micro sd sitting around, so I swapped it out. It's made a HUGE difference in how her phone runs (faster).

I know you hate your current droid...but don't discount other models which can be cheaper than an iphone just because your current phone is giving you fits. I'm assuming that since you are eligible for an upgrade, you've had your current phone for a couple years.

Like computers, I personally feel a phone can become obsolete after a couple years (due to new technology advances). Heck, my mom has had her Galaxy S For 18 months and can't find screen protectors or hard cases to protect her phone because t-mobile has cleared out their inventory of that phone and it's accessories.

Good luck with your purchase!! :)

OMG....I TOTALLY screwed something up!! I checked the movies that I wanted to put on my iPod (the 4 POTC movies) and then hit "sync". Now, it shows that I have 3.3GB used and 55GB available! But for some reason, it shows that I have 15 movies which are taking up 21GB. When I try to watch one of my movies on the iPod, it says "The requested URL is not available on this server"....and NONE of my movies will work, even though they are all showing up as being on the iPod!

Ughh!! It's too late at night to be messing with this...I'll try again in the morning! Sorry about all the questions...you guys are the greatest!

Lol. I've gotten to that point before...too darn late...why am I even messing with this? Hope you get it figured out tomorrow!!

I have a Sprint iphone 5 with 32 gb of memory. On it right now I have a total capacity of 28.1 gb available. I currently have 1664 songs loaded, 764 photos, 89 applications and 20 videos, no movies. 6.6gb available. Truthfully, unless you just need to movies I would not load them, they suck your battery way down. As others mentioned you can add and delete them frequently if needed.

Truthfully, unless you just need to movies I would not load them, they suck your battery way down.

This is completely wrong. Simply having a movie, song, app, or wahtever loaded on your iDevice will not suck the battery. You would need to be actively using the iDevice with that particular movie, song, app to have any change in the battery status (beyond normal network searching, etc). They will obviously occupy your free space, which can make adding other movies, songs, or apps hard to do, but simply having them loaded will not affect your battery.

To the OP, go into Settings->General->Usage and see what you have loaded, and how much space it is taking up. Remember that if you do choose to not load movies on it all the time (which makes sense to me) that you would need to have that amount of space free when you do need to load them. So if you use a PP's example of 1GB for a standard def version of Brave, then if you went to load that you would need to ensure that you have at least 1 GB of free space. However, remember that full DVD is 4.7ish GB. And that the DVD will more than likely contain bonus features, and is meant to be watched on a large 40" (or whatever size) screen. So when you load movies onto an iDevice, they can be significantly smaller than the original file size and you won't notice the difference. I just loaded a batch onto my DW iPad that were around 700MB each, and you can definitely go smaller without a big quality drop.

Excuse me, I did not clarify that, yes, when you watch any video your battery goes south quickly.

Well, I did it...I bought the 16GB 4S tonight, since the sale ends tomorrow. DH even decided to get one too! We spent more money on the cases than we did on the phones:sad:, but we knew we'd need good cases. He got an Otterbox Defender (because it includes a belt clip) and I went for the Lifeproof case. I'll get a clip later, but I couldn't stomach $100 all at once for a case and clip:crazy2:. I usually have my phone in my purse or pocket anyways.

I was able to put all of my contacts, all of my songs, all of my apps (plus a few new ones!) and all 4 POTC movies onto the phone and it still shows that I have 4GB remaining:cool1:.

The next plan is to get the AppleCare for both of them. If I understand correctly, I need to take the phones to the Apple Store and buy the plan. It is about $100 for each phone and covers them from damage/defect for 2 years. You only get 2 claims on each plan and then you will need to repurchase the plan if you want to continue the coverage. Sound right so far? The salesman at Best Buy said that I should not tell the folks at the Apple Store where I got the phones (just say they were a Christmas present) because "they get a little hinky" with phones that are bought somewhere else. What's up with this? Can someone enlighten me on what I am "entitled" to? (I mean that as "what am I completely within my rights to purchase?")

You may be able to call apple and buy the AppleCare plus over the phone.. It's worth a shot
