Another I95 question

The topic of I95 got me to thinking - when we got our trip tic from AAA, they have us going down 95 from NC, but around jacksonville have us go off onto 295 then back onto 95 to I-4. Does anyone know if there is a reason they have us looping around on 295 in that area? Just wondering, since it seems to make more sense to just follow straight on 95.

I always take the 295 bypass - just took it yesterday on the way home!!!! Downtown Jacksonville can be quite congested and it's been under construction several times when I've been through over the past few years. The bypass starts about 10 miles before downtown and lasts about ten miles past it. It's at least 3 lanes, I think - it's just less congested and I prefer it over the busier 95.

Trust us, like DVCLiz says you don't want to go through Jacksonville on I95 unless it is after 11pm and be on the others before 5am. I have driven it quite a few times and unless it was around the times I stated I would never think about going through it.
Imagine I40/440 around Raleigh between 7am & 8am or in the afternoon around 5pm. You know it is one place you don't want to be. Well Jacksonville it 5x worse.

We drove through in January, on the weekend. There was alot of construction, lanes shrank and shifted, and made alot of turns with "jersey walls" on both sides. I think they are changing the interchanges. I wouldn't reccomend it, but my DH choose to go through Jacksonville again on the return trip.

It may be more miles, but you'll thank yourself and get through with a lot less headache if you take I-295. It's a breeze compared to downtown Jacksonville! Take care and drive safe!!!
