Another grocery store hero, now dead....

Seems like things like these shootings today almost go unnoticed if we don't have 'mass casualties'. Again, another crazy 20 year old perp, AR-15 plus a shotgun in hands, goes into another grocery store in Oregon. Before going in, he shoots and kills an 84 year old man, Glenn Bennett. Once in, an employee, Donald Surrett, Jr, attempted to thwart the shooter. He lost his life doing so, having been shot by the perp also. Surrett slowed the shooter down enough so when the police were able to arrive, the shooter thankfully blew his own brains out.

"Video surveillance shows that upon hearing gunshots in the Safeway, victim Donald Surrett Jr., had ample time to flee the scene but instead moved a produce cart into position to hide from the attacker," Bend Police spokeswoman Sheila Miller said in a release Tuesday. "When the suspect approached, Surrett waited for the suspect to look away, then attacked the suspect with a produce knife he kept on his hip."

Sad stories like this, so often, so sad.

We've visited this Safeway to pickup snacks and drinks when we vacation in Bend. Very sad but thankful for the heroes that helped stop the shooter and prevented more loss of life.

We've stopped at this Safeway also for the same reasons, snacks etc. It's just too sad. :(

I didn’t even hear about this. Seems like the number slaughtered has to be north of 5/6 or so to garner a lot of media attention. And by that…. I mean it’s out of the news by the next day. If a specific group is targeted then perhaps the shooting gets an additional day or two. If it’s elementary school kids… a bit more. We’re just numb to it.

I avoid grocery stores and mostly just order my groceries online and they will bring them out to the car - kind of more convenient that way anyway. I avoid malls too. Seems like most of the mall shootings we have around here are a little less random and more about fights between people, but still, being in one gets me a little creeped out. But yeah, on vacations sometimes it's unavoidable to go into the grocery store. I just try and get in an out as fast as I can. We visited several Safeways on our trip out to WA/OR this summer.

I have done the same....changed my behavior a bit. I don't do online groceries anymore, but when I need to go to the grocery store....I go early. Teenaged boys and young men aren't early risers and neither are the mentally ill/deranged ones. They don't typically unleash murderous mayhem until early afternoon at the earliest.

Very sad and very sad we have to live in fear everyday just to do the normal things we do in life. I don't know how anyone brings a child into this world.

This is horrendous but to keep it in perspective, US is the 3rd most populated country in the world and many states have more humans than most highly recognized nations. To not expect a bunch of nutters in the mix is just plain unrealistic. That said, certainly more can be done to help avoid violent outbursts. If we can tag the geniuses in school for special attention we should also be identifying the psychopaths and try behavior modification, at the very least prioritizing getting them out of abusive homes to avoid making new batches of monsters every year. Every time we all see a documentary about a serial killer or mass murders there is one thing is common and that is child abuse, since abuse heinous all by itself, but also the main ingredient in the recipe for monsters maybe child abuse should be front and center of concern? I read somewhere that around 1% of a given population fits this category, that is a LOT of humans who are just suffering until they become a new problem. Maybe the reason this won't stop is we are just plain doing it wrong.

I’m a gun owner and have multiple handguns for competitive shooting and several rifles and shotguns for hunting but I’ve never seen the need or reason a common citizen needs to own an AR-15 or any type of assault rifle.
:worship:

I also, Steve, an a gun owner. At one time, I had a hand gun (revolver), a shotgun and a rifle (22 target). In the past, I have gotten rid of both the handgun and the shotgun. I still have the 22, but will probably be getting rid of that also, have not shot it for probably 45 years or so.

And I so agree with your thoughts on 'regular' people 'needing' military type weapons for so-called self protection or really any other use. You're a smart gun owner, Steve.

Of course, first, you should know that there's no such thing as an assault rifle.

In home defense, should you ever need to defend your family, the pistol is the best defense weapon... to use to get to your AR15.

If we focused more on the persons and less on the inanimate object, we would get a lot farther ahead in figuring out how to solve the problem. Of course, some folks have to understand what the problem is first, which is why they focus on the wrong thing.

Take LuvOrlando's post above. That is the stuff everyone should be talking about, not chunks of plastic and steel that do nothing if not for the person with it in their hand.

I currently work at a middle school. There are 3 guidance counselors, 2 assistant principals, one principal and a family resource coordinator. The counselors have lists of requests every day from kids wanting to meet with them. All the kids have access to a pass system to let them easily reach out for help. Teachers also spend time communicating with kids to provide support. If anyone thinks mental health is not addressed, they are mistaken.
