My DD is 12 and is beginning to get dark hair over her lip. She's starting to get a little self-conscious about it.

I've never had to deal with this problem. What's the best way to deal with it?
I thought about taking her to my salon and having it waxed, but I thought that might be a little traumatic for a 12 year old!
What about bleaching? Can anyone recommend any good products?

Thanks!!

I would try bleaching first. If it's just a little amount bleaching will do the trick.

If it becomes a lot I would use a depilitory cream first.

Do bleaching first because you know how it is with removing hair, once you do it, you'll ALWAYS have to do it!

I was SO self-conscious about my lip hair and eyebrows when I was younger. All my Mom did was want me to pluck and bleach. But tome even with it bleached it was still there (the lip hair.) I think that even though I would have been scared, having it waxed would have been great for me. Especially self-esteem wise.
Not to get to personal, but do you or someone she is close to get your eyebrows or lip done? Maybe you could have appointments together so she could see what happens. I also had electrolosis done on my eyebrows when I was in 8th or 9th grade. Best thing I ever did! :)

Jenn Lynn....funny you mention the eyebrows!
My stylist suggested that I also bring her in to have them waxed...at least for the first time. That way, if she decides to start plucking away, at least she'll have a guide to follow.

I did mention to her about getting it waxed and she didn't seem to hesitant. She did ask if it will hurt and I told her it was just like pulling a band aid off.
But, I've never had to do my upper lip, only my eyebrows.

Is it painful on the upper lip?
How often do you have to do it once you start?

I asked about this with my dd and the lady that does my hair said she would do it but asked me about medications she's on. So make sure, if she is on any meds, to check and see if they cause skin sensitivity. That makes a big difference with the chemicals they use and the wax - she may not be able to have it done.

She also suggested that if Britt was interested she could come in and she would do it to a spot on her arm because the arm area is similar to the feeling on the upper lip and it's also less noticable. It will give her an idea of the feeling of it being done and the wax that will be put on. See if yours will also do that. Just an idea

The upper lip is not that bad. Probably close to getting underneth your eybrows done. To me it is more the anticipation and waitng for them to pull it off! LOL!

After having them done for so long my skin has grown really tough. It's used to having those hairs ripped out! ;)

I would say every 2-3 weeks for the lip. Mine seems to grow back really fast though. It's really not that bad. :)

I use a depilatory cream by Sally Hansen and it works great. It's nice because it's cheap, always in the house if I need it, and it's fast. If you do go this route, just make sure you leave it on for a little less than the minimum time the first time - it can burn if it's on too long. Experiment and you'll find the right amount of time to remove the hair without irritation.

I must say I prefer bleaching myself. Waxing just doesn't seem to last long enough for me and depilatory creams are too irritating to my skin. I am self concious about my dark hairs (not the light ones) on my face and it seems to work best for me.

I vote for the depil. cream, too.

I've used it for years, and it's a lot less painful and much less expensive than waxing. And one application seems to last me about a month or so.

But do be very careful to not get it ON the lips or leave it on too long. I did the first time, and it can actually start eating the skin.

I leave it on about 3 minutes total.

The Sally Hansen one is the one that works the fastest, but is also the one I burned my lip with. There's another one called "Surgi-Cream" that I like better - it takes 7-10 minutes, and I've never had a bad experience with it. It also comes with a soothing finishing balm in the box.
