We are due to stay at the CGH soon and I have heard people on this board talk about a stair way they can use to go out only which makes it quicker to get to the esplanade. Where abouts is this? Is it at the end of the coridoor with the 400 rooms on which brings you out by the World of Disney store or is it somewhere else?
Thanks

Just a bump to see if anyone can answer this.

Here ya go

quote from MousePlanet Article, "How Far Is it" by Alex Stroup

"So how about the Grand Californian Hotel? Surely it is the best of all possible worlds when it comes to geographic location? Well, it depends. It depends on whether you're going to the park or whether you're returning to the room. Whether Disney's California Adventure park is open or whether it is closed. Whether you are aware of the lesser-known exits or whether you only know of the official routes.

The shortest walking distance between a room in the Grand Californian Hotel and the middle of the Esplanade is about 600 feet. Looking at that route, some of you may be perplexed about how it is done. That is because most people are unaware of a locked exit at the far end of the hotel wing nearest Disneyland. (link to map: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=88766 )

Most guests are unaware of this, however, and since it is a locked door (that you can use to exit but not re-enter the hotel), you can't use it to return to your room. If you had the room with the shortest walk to Disneyland, your return trip through Downtown Disney would be 2,315 feet long (http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=88770) . Put another way, it is possible for the Grand Californian Hotel room closest to Disneyland to require a walk as long as going out to the Anaheim Fairfield Inn behind the McDonald's on Harbor."

Here's a link to that article, very helpful: http://www.mouseplanet.com/articles.php?art=mm060329as

Also here is a website that has an actual hotel layout; the link won't paste, but it's <snip>. : www.*****************/grandcalifornian/grandcalifornianhotel.html . There is a list of pictures on the right sidebar; click on the lobby layout and the guest room layout.

We accessed it on the fifth floor. I don't know if the other floros have same access. It was the fire exit stairs, but no alarm would sound. And it let you out right by La Brea cafe. Yes, you can get out but not in (which explains why we had to call a member of our group to come down in her robe and let us back in as we got stuck in the little grassy area unable to cross to la Brea..or go anywhere else, because of the 10,000 half marathoners running right where we needed to walk :)

You know, I suppose if they've measured it it's right....were they measuring the interior walk to your room at GCh, and not the interior walk at offsite hotels?....but having stayed off site (desert palms) and at DLH, I'm prepared to say that GCH is handy enough for me, even without the secret door! The combination of quality and proximity means when we return, we'll always favour it over DLH or PP, even though the price hurts!
