Another Facebook question...."Privacy Announcement

 What gets me is that this move that is supposed to help us control our own privacy actually takes some of our privacy away.

I use Facebook just for close family and friends. I don't have any desire to have random people from my past "finding" me. I liked the fact that I could put a picture of my kids as my profile pic and not have that visible to everyone, and I liked having my friends list only available to friends.

Now, you can't make your profile pic and friends lists private; they are ALWAYS available to everyone no matter what. I don't know how this helps us control our privacy!

If I'm wrong on this and someone can figure out a way to keep your profile pic and friends list private, let me know!

I think you're right about this. I was playing around w/Facebook to see the changes and I don't think there's any way for you to hide your profile pic, your friend list, and your "pages" (stuff you're a fan of) and groups. Before the change, I was able to hide these features from non-friends. :confused3

Someone on cnn.com posted this as a fix to hiding your friends list. I haven't tried it yet.

"First, click the pencil icon in the Friends box on your profile. Then, uncheck the "Show my friends on my profile" box. People who come to your profile will not be able to see this information"

Update - I did this last night and it worked. My friends list is now removed from my public profile.

But then doesn't that mean no one (including friends) can see your friends list?

I think it does, which is why I haven't done that, yet. It's either everyone can see your friends list (which I hate) or no one can. :headache:

I am not happy about this either....ugh!!!

If only your frinds can see your profile, then only your frinds can see your list?

Someone PM me, we can do an experiment. Since I am not anyone's friend here, I will let you know my facebook id, you can search for me and tell me what you see when you find me.

I'm not sure. I'll have to log into DH's account and see what he can see on my page. I don't mind if my friends can't see my friends list. They can see when people post comments on my page and if I friend someone, so that's good enough for me.

If you go to privacy settings, there is a box that says "show profile" or something like that. It's in the upper right corner. If you click on it, it shows your profile as the general public (everyone outside of your friends) sees it.

OK, well I suppose I will retrict friend setting because it used to be that only friends could see friends. I bet FB will make more changes.

I hope they make more changes...and actually make them more private this time. I was amazed that the page describing the changes actually encourages people to allow everyone to see their profile then goes on to say that if you want to make things like your photos, videos & status updates truly private, it's best to only allow friends of friends to see them. How is that truly private?????? If I want my friends' friends to see my info, I'll add them to my friend list...thanks for the privacy updates FB :thumbsup2

Friends of Friends? Um, nope. I already get friend requests from friends of friends. I don't know them, I don't add them.

I don't mind if muy friends see most everything, I had my settings that way, withthe exception of some of my photo albums, I restrict them dependoing on who is in them, etc.

I think FB hired some real hackers to be thier programmers.

I checked my page from DH's account and he can only see our mutual friends, not all of my friends. Oh well...I guess my friends are going to have to live with just seeing mutual friends on my page.

Somewhere under privacy you can type in one of your friends names to see your profile as they see it...instead of having to actually log in as someone else.
