Another ebay problem...help me out here

I'm new to the whole Ebay thing as well, but I think you're setting yourself up for some pretty bad feedback. People travel during the holidays, they may have been picking it up on the way to or from somewhere. I think you jumped the gun by cancelling and only giving them a few hours to respond. I'm sure they weren't sitting by the computer, mouse in hand.

If I have the timeline correct, the auction ended last night around 9:30 pm. By 9:00 am today, less than 12 hours later, the auction was cancelled because the bidder had not responded yet and the seller assumed that the bidder is an idiot.

Even if the bidder does turn out to be an idiot who bid on the auction without intending to pick it up, the seller is now equally at fault for the auction ending poorly.

To be honest, AlleyKat, you needed to give the bidder more time to respond. Less than 12 hours, especially late on a Sunday night, is not enough time. You also should not have automatically assumed that the item was not going to be picked up. The best thing to do is probably to write off this auction as a learning experience and be more patient next time.

So the auction ended last night and you haven't heard from them by this morning and you just cancelled it? If I were your buyer I'd be pretty upset. How do you know they didn't purchase this item for someone who lives locally as a gift? or have someone who lives near you that can pick it up for them and arrange shipping?

I believe ebay rules give a buyer 3 days to contact you and 7 days to make payment. You've given your buyer less than 24 hours. I also believe one of ebays new rules is that you have to take Paypal (one of the reasons I stopped selling on ebay). Before selling anything else you might want to read through the rules so you have a better understanding of what they allow. I have to say if I were your buyer I'd be leaving you some negative feedback for sure.

This is what I was thinking. OP, you need to be fair. And you shouldn't call people idiots before you even know if they duped you; at the time of your post, you honestly had no idea what the bidders intentions were---you were making a lot of assumptions. I've bought things out of state and had family pick it up---I have family all over. So far, we only have PROOF of YOU making a huge mistake. Just because you only gave the person a few hours in the middle of the night on a Sunday (what was it---12 hours?) you actually think that's fair? Live and learn.

I agree. I would've waited at least the three days before cancelling anything.

I also agree w/ this. You shouldn't have canceled before waiting at least 3 days. Shoot maybe even till the end of today. Some people take a couple days to get back to you.

I can't believe the OP hasn't responded yet. It's been at least 5 hours since her last post. ;)

OP, should have given the buyer more time to respond. As others have stated, as per Ebay rules, they have 3 days. And they very may well be travelling to your area and are able to pick it up. Or maybe it's for a child/niece/nephew who lives near you. Heck, they may have even been bidding for someone else. I know I have done that for my Mom...she is not the most computer literate person the planet, but she has emailed me something she sees that she wants, and I will take care of it from there for her. This could be any one of those scenarios. (Or the buyer COULD be an idiot, who didn't read the description, but you really need to give them the benefit of the doubt until that is proven true.)

I too have traveled several states away to pick up an item, round trips that generally take around 6+ hours.

There is nothing exceptional about this item. It's something one could easily purchase in their area for a fraction of what the transport cost would be, especially considering the bidder literally lives just under 2,000 miles away!

Maybe they were buying it for someone up there. I think you need to contact them before you cancel. If you did that to me and didn't contact me first I would leave you very bad feedback

Maybe they are moving to Massachusetts currently or just moved here & haven't changed their eBay address.

As for not replying, they could be stuck somewhere due to the huge snowstorm.
