Can you only book in the other Disney Resorts when your DVC home hotel is full, or can you do it any time? Are there any restrictions?

You can book anytime, they take a lot of points comapared to DVC villas, though. But it may be worth it occasionally if the person really wants to stay at a particular Disney resort.

Keep in mind that once you make a reservation at one of the non-DVC WDW resorts, the points used become "reservation" points. That means if you cancel the non-DVC WDW reservation, you cannot use those points to make a reservation at a DVC resor or for a trade via Interval International.

Reservation points cannot be banked and expire at the end of the use year if not used. They can only be used to book something in the Disney Collection (including the DCL), the Adventurer Collection or the Conceirge Collection.

Bottom Line: Don't use points for a non-DVC WDW reservation unless you are very sure you will be able to take the trip!

Disney Collection reservations may be made 11 months ahead. As already notedm there wil be limitations if you need to cancel - so be sure you will use the reservation.

In addition, during the last 60 days of your Use Year, you cannot make a non-DVC reservation to stay during that same timeframe. (You can make a reservation for the last 60 days of your Use Year as long as it's made prior to 60 days before the Use Year ends.)
