Has anyone ever had any problems with the scanners at the airport wiping our your pictures??? This is our first time traveling with ours and not sure what to do.

Thanks

I've used a digital camera for years and I've never had that problem. However, my camera has always been in carry-on luggage. Not because I'm afraid the checked luggage scanners would hurt it, I just thought it would get a less rough ride in my purse.

I've never had a swiped image issue.

You've got nothing to worry about although this would be a good topic for a few urban legends. Hmm.... "After my flash card went through security at ORD, a ghostly image of Walt himself appeared beside my children in all their character greeting pictures" .... :D :hyper: :smooth:

If any doubts arise, ask the officer to please hand search your bag. At most, they will empty the contents and send the empty bag through the scanner. However, there should be no problems, with the carry-on scanners anyway. I too never send anything of value in my checked baggage.

I take my digi-cam with me everywhere! I also carry it in my carry one. However, I have never lost a picture due to luggage scanning.

Have a great trip! Disney has some of the best backdrops for picture taking!

I would make sure that I kept my camera - digital or regular in my carryon. Its not just the images that can disappear. The camera could mysteriously disappear as well. Really, I never put anything of actual value in my checked luggage. It would just be too easy for something to become missing.

You may want to carry on the camera and if you are worried about the pics being erased, take out the memory stick and place it in the little tray they have you put loose change in. Not sure what airports you are dealing with, but you figure Orlando has many tourists, and you know they all have cameras as they are leaving!:earsgirl: :earsgirl:

I have had a digital camera for my last 6 disney trips..... never had a problem with any of the pictures being lost off the cards. I always always carry my camera both digital and 35mm in my carry on luggage. That way it is never out of my sight. There would be nothing worse then getting to Disney without your camera or getting home and finding out it was gone!

From what I understand X-Rays do not affect digital cameras. The reason there was concern with film cameras related to the nature of films light sensitive emulsion. With the increasing power of airport x-ray machines came the increased risk of fogged film from x-ray exposure. I think placing the film in checked luggage was, in the past, a way of avoiding this problem. However, currently all luggage is scanned with high powered X-Ray scanners. Also, with slower films ISO 100, 200, there was less a chance of fogged film. Again, this is negated by the newer scanners.

There is one issue with “one use” digital cameras. I think Kodak is now selling its one use cameras as digital cameras. In truth these are the same film based cameras of the past. They simply scan the images as they are processed. If you have such a camera you may wish to have it hand inspected.

Ding, ding, ding!!! We have a winner! (Welcome to the DIS.)

Visable light and X-rays are both part of the electromagnetic spectrum. Digital storage devices such as CompactFlash cards, are not sensitive to that form of radiation . Think of it this way... if airport scanners, like the ones used at carry-on check points, damaged digital storage cards then they'd also destroy laptops put through the same devices.
