You guys always have the answers so I thought I would come to you for help.

Unfortunately, we have had a little mishap with the power cord for our Sony Vaio laptop last night. We need a new one. The battery only stays charged for about 10 minutes so now we really can not get to the information we need off the computer. I know I need another new cord, but the only way to get an actual Sony cord is to order online and have it shipped. My DS has a project on the computer that he really needs to retrieve. Sony has advised me not to use a universal cord.

Does anyone know if you use a universal power cord... can it hurt your computer? Where is the best and most reasonable place to purchase one?

Please help!!

Universal/non-name brand cords will generally work just fine -- I wouldn't worry about it. I've bought and used laptop cords from ebay, and so have my friends, and nobody has ever had issues with them.

If I were you, I'd go onto ebay and look for a laptop cord that is listed as compatible with your make/model of laptop. A compatible cord is different than a universal cord -- it's sort of a non name-brand "copycat" cord that will work with a certain set of laptops rather than a cord that is supposed to work with all laptops. I believe they will generally run around 30 dollars.

Think about it -- OF COURSE Sony will claim that somehow you will cause damage to your laptop if you don't buy their super expensive name brand power cord :headache: That doesn't mean it's actually true.
