Another Comparison -- Bluezoo or Flying Fish?

You were so helpful earlier when I asked for help choosing between Citrico's and California Grill I thought I'd try it again!:) This time I'm trying to decide between Bluezoo and Flying Fish. We're staying at the Dolphin, so either would be convenient. I'm already planning two dinners at the Swan/Dolphin (Shula's and Il Mulino), so I thought it might be nice to branch out, but I'm not sure it really makes a difference. We like attentive service, good and nicely presented food, and a decent wine list. Which restaurant would you recommend?

I'm interested to hear these responses too. We're trying Flying Fish for the first time next Tuesday and Bluezoo next Wednesday. I look forward to reporting back when I return to the boards.

Again, both are incredible.

For atmosphere Bluezoo is much quieter and more relaxing and the food is to die for...the best filet I ever had and the dessert presentation was amazing

We will be trying bluezoo on our May trip, so I can't weigh in on that, but I can tell you that I love and adore the Flying Fish. It was my favorite meal of our trip last month. I can't say enough about it. My Blood Orange margarita was perfection in a glass, it complimented my Wild Gulf Coast Shrimp Cocktail absolutely fabulously, and th Potato Wrapped Red Snapper was amazing.

And dessert.....mmmmmmmm....flourless chocolate cake.

Oh boy. This is tough, as I'm a shameless (though uncompensated) shill for the Flying Fish. I've had many an outstanding meal there, including two that I count among the best I've ever had.

However...

I just went to Bluezoo for the second time last Friday, and both times were outstanding. I had the sublime chef's tasting both times, but the regular menu items that the others at my table had were just as stellar.

I would be pained to pick a favorite. Six of the eight (yes) times so far this year I ate at the Flying Fish, I wasn't eating off the regular menu. When Chef Tim goes off-menu is when he really shines. So, I would say that for the regular menu, I would give the edge to Bluezoo. If you're flush, and you can spring for the Chef's Counter at Flying Fish, I would give it the slight edge. I think you would enjoy either equally well, food-wise.

I would give Bluezoo the clear edge for atmosphere. It's mod and snazzy without being ironically-tragically-hip. Fewer children (if that bothers you), lower noise level, and no one seems to wear park attire. Bluezoo definitely has the edge for bar atmosphere and decor. I think the bartenders at each are skilled, but the Flying Fish bartenders are constrained somewhat by the depressingly generic Disney drink menu. Bluezoo has a "master mixologist" creating their drinks; even though I mostly stick to the standards, their signature drinks are both inventive and well-executed.

I've had excellent service at both. At the Flying Fish, I usually sit at the bar, and Craig, Lorna, and Kristin have always treated me embarrassingly well. At Bluezoo, Brandon and Dustin have given me outstanding service and shown an impressive knowledge of the menu and wine list. I'll call this a toss-up as well.

I guess I'm still being pretty equivocal, but that's as definitive as I can get. I'm at the point where I'm trying to figure out how I can work both into every Disney trip, and how my wallet will stand it...

Couldn't have said it better myself. We eat at both restaurants each trip (especially now that Blue Zoo takes TIW), and always at the bar.

I'd give a slight edge to the Zoo---

I also give a slight edge to bluezoo although I do try to eat at both of these on every vacation. I can't really say if it's because the food is so much better (since both are good), but I certainly enjoy the quieter, more adult and upscale feel of bluezoo.

Todd English's bluezoo™ would win this time around. I did both the chef's tasting at Flying Fish, and the shellfish platter and desserts on various days at the bar at Todd's place, and I had to give the edge to Todd this time. (Flying Fish meal was October 13th; the Todd stuff was several times within the days before/after that.)

It could be that I wasn't feeling all that great on the day I went to Flying Fish, but I really was not thrilled with the chef's menu at Flying Fish. The food didn't thrill me as much as the wine dinner I went to a year prior, but the part that failed me most was a palate cleanser sorbet that tasted like toothpaste. Don't add creme de menthe to a palate cleanser. I made the sous chef taste it (why didn't he taste it before serving to me?? :confused3). He agreed that it was too minty fresh.

I have to say the food the non-chef's counter people were eating looked great, and my friend's appetizer she ordered looked good. I think I just got the short end of the stick that night. I'll order from the main menu next time I'm at Flying Fish.

I've only been to FF so I can only speak about that. I loved it, my family loved it. The only issue is that it is 2 TS on the dining plan we don't quite feel we're getting the best bang for our buck but the food and atmosphere are both terrific and you would be sure to have a great meal there.

Bluezoo I've heard nothing but good things about. The atmosphere is probably quieter and more refined. FF is fairly loud as the kitchen is right there in your face.

What a great dilemma!!! Either rest. is heaven. You can't go wrong with either one.:surfweb:

Thanks! We had a fantastic time at both restaurants. I think that I definitely preferred the atmosphere at Bluezoo. The dim lighting, stylish decor and quieter dining room make for a pretty cool experience. The only thing I didn't like is that our table had me seated on a bench seat that ran the length of multiple tables. It's not very intimate to share a bench with patrons at the next table over. I prefer to be able to ignore my neighbors while having dinner. Lessons learned, I guess. Next time we'll probably ask to take our meal in the lounge.

Flying Fish has an open kitchen and is therefore noisier and has a more casual feel. I know people always talk about how one should dress up for a signature dinner, and I too feel more comfortable overdressed than under. But I think I would be happy in that restaurant wearing anything that would be acceptable on a golf course. That is to say, a shirtdress or nice shorts, a polo shirt and sneakers would not be out of place here. If you want something a little more casual, Flying Fish is the better bet.

As far as the food goes, my boyfriend and I each had similar dishes at both restaurants and both preferred what we had at Flying Fish. That actually surprised us a little as we thought the Flying Fish menus looked somewhat pretentious while planning for these meals. Now we know better. The dishes there are made of quite capable creativity, not pretension. And our desserts there — a caramelized banana Napoleon and a pear crème brûlée — were possibly the best of the whole trip.

I do have to give Bluezoo a nod for great appetizers, though. Their New England clam chowder far exceeded my expectations and my boyfriend loved his shrimp and grits. Bluezoo also wins in wine selection, which I see is a requirement for your party.

Both restaurants gave us attentive service, though I didn't really care for either of our servers' personalities. Our waiter at Flying Fish was very stiff and formal. On the contrary, the man who served us at Bluezoo was practically a cartoon character. But both were experienced, knew the menus well, were able to advise us, and made themselves scarce after doing so, which we like.

All in all, I must agree with the others. You can't go wrong with either meal. I think the best thing to do is look over the menus, which change pretty frequently according to season, and see what stands out to you.
