Going to visit museums and general sight seeing.
Anyone use the city pass, and feel it's a good deal?
Staying at Embassy Suites downtown location.
Will it be easy to get to Field Museum, and Science and Industry from there?
Going with daughter, 2 grandsons and 1 granddaughter. Five won't work for taxi. Thanks for any help
(Traveling via train, youngest is wanting this.):)

The Museum of Science and Industry is not close to the main areas of Chicago at all. It would be a long cab ride since it is on the far south side. While I think it is probably the best museum in Chicago, it is not easy to get to.

You can take the Red Line 'L' to Roosevelt to get to the Field Museum if you want to skip two cabs. It is also quite a walk though from the train, so with three children, maybe a few cabs might be better for you. You can ask the hotel to see if they can call a van cab for you, but you might have to reserve it in advance since they are few.

Thanks for the info. The hotel is on State St. Reservations said about 1 block from Michigan Ave.
Reservation is refundable, may do some hotel searches for different area, but always pleased with Embassy hotels, for larger group.

We take the city bus many times when we're in Chicago. Here's a link http://www.transitchicago.com/
The website even has a feature that helps you plan your trip, what time and where to catch the bus. It's not too difficult and not too expensive. People are helpful too, just ask! If you need to know exactly where to get off the driver will help (at least they have for me in the past).
I've never done the City Pass, but sounds like a good deal.
Good luck and have fun in Chicago! :) We go there often. We're about 3 hours away.

Instead of city passes check into recip passes from any science
Center. We get boonshoft Ohio passes...most places were free in Chicago..children's mus..field mus..science and industry mus. For a little more then one city pass you have an entire family pass to use all year at a ton of places.

We have not been to museum of science and industry, but have taken the city bus to Shedd and Field Museum. City bus was easy for those trips.

We had a minivan cab take us back to the train station from our hotel last time ... so they do exist. However, when we left the train station to head to the hotel, I noticed parties of 5 splitting up into two cabs.

I'm a Chicago Native, living in the south suburbs now. If you are near Millennium Park, that is the perfect location for getting to museums and also close to Navy pier and mag mile. The advice about taking metra to the museum of science and industry is good. Also, don't miss the Art Institute.

Your hotel is at the corner of State and Ohio, it is north of the River in the River North area. It is NOT in the Loop or very near Millenium Park/Grant Park.

Cabbing to MOSI from the Mag Mile area would cost you a fortune; don't do it. As the PP noted, take the #10 CTA bus. You will have to either go east to Michigan Ave or South down State Street to the Loop to catch it. The route with the least walking is probably to get on the Red Line subway at State & Grand, ride down two stops to Monroe and cross the street to the bus stop. (You could also leave the subway at State/Lake, but that's a large transfer station, so you would still be walking a lot, just underground.) Getting to the Field (and Shedd) is just as easy, take the #146 Museum Campus bus from Michigan at Ohio. Both of these special bus routes will deposit you right across the street from the museums you want to go to.

If you haven't ordered your CTA visitor passes yet, do so right now. It's much more difficult to get them after you arrive, as the machines at Union Station (and MDW) often run out during summer tourist season, and when that happens you need to visit a CVS store to buy them.) When they mail the tickets they will also send you a nice central city transit map you can study, or you can download it at: http://www.transitchicago.com/assets/1/brochures/13JN_017-DTSSG.pdf

One special note: if you are planning to visit the major museums on a summer weekend day, be prepared for the possibility of having to stand in line to buy tickets. Shedd, especially, can have a wait of up to three hours in the ticket line. This is where the CityPasses or membership passes prove their worth, because you can skip that line.

One little fun thing I recommend: splurge a bit to take the water taxi from the Museum Campus to Navy Pier (the Chicago Children's Museum is excellent). It's a short boat ride that the kids will love, and is faster than any transit on land -- it also gives you a lovely view of the downtown skyline.

If you are not used to subways, here is a little tip: carry a pocket compass. (A real one, not the compass app on a cell phone). It will help you determine which exit to take to leave the station to point yourself in the correct direction that you want to go once you are above ground. This is because the station exits are labeled with which street you will emerge on, but if you don't know the streets well, you won't know if that street will put you N, S, E, or W of the station.

Also, if one of you will be carrying a smartphone, there are several apps that help with CTA and cabs in Chicago, see this article for reviews: http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20121012/NEWS07/121019931/navigating-the-navigation-apps (There is also a cab app that lets you specify number of passengers: https://hailocab.com/chicago)

I have stayed at that ES and the one over on Columbus Drive. I like the State Street one because it is close to the El (Red Line). I like the Columbus Drive one because it's close to Millennium Park and Navy Pier. I would stick with one of them if only for the free breakfast and happy hour.

ETA: How old is your Granddaughter? You may want to add a visit to the American Girl store up at the Water Tower Place if she's between 4-12.

Thank you all for the help.
Love the advice to get a science center membership here in Michigan.
From what I read, this would then give free admission into some of our choices.
Also, the info about the boat ride.
Won't make it to Ag store. Granddaughter is 13.
Wish we could pick another hotel, but the buffet breakfasts at Embassy Suite hotels are a great savings.
Will also check for CTA information, and Redline bus #10.:thumbsup2

Don't waste another minute worrying about your hotel! Chicago is big and your hotel is fairly centrally located. You really don't want to be in the Loop since it's all office buildings and department stores. The Mag Mile is really just a short walk away. You are very close to the El station. Plus, there are LOTS of restaurants nearby. there are local ones like the original Uno's and Harry Caray's (Italian food - best Chicken Vesuvio), Weber Grill (like the kettle BBQ) and there are chains like Buca di Beppo nearby which is always nice with a big group.

Don't worry about taking the red line to the #10, just walk over to Michigan Avenue. It is just a few blocks. There is a stop at Michigan and Erie.

Dis board help is the best.
I'm feeling better about our choices.:)

We just got back from Chicago last week and we stayed at the ES on Columbus, but have also stayed at the one on State. They are both great hotels, but I did find the one on Columbus to be a bit more convenient to transport but not a big (it is also cheaper, if you want to check about switching). Anyway, we got a 3 day transit pass on Groupon for $9/person and it was great. The CTA website has a trip planner that gives you step by step directions on how to use their public transport. Just plug in your hotel (even by name) and then Field Museum or whatever and it gives great, easy to follow directions. Have a great trip!

We went to Chicago in Janurary. However, because our kids are so young and I didn't trust CTA to get around. We paid to park wherever we went. It was pretty expensive, but was convenient for us. We visited MOSI and Shedd, we also headed up to Lego land discovery center. My family loved this, it's outside of the city, but it was a fun time. Definitely worth checking out for kids especially if they love legos. When we ate dinner we walked to nearby restaurants.

Once when I was a kid we stayed at ES and I believe Edebevics is nearby there. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong or if it is closed. They are dressed in 50s fashions and it's just fun place to go eat. I loved it there when I was a kid.

Ed Debevics is still there at 640 North Wells. Still a fun place to visit at least once too.
