Everyone seems to be having fun trying to identify the other book about the doors, so I'd like to throw one out, too:
It was a mystery (I think there were a few with the same character - Meg, maybe?) that took place on an old plantation. Something was hidden at the landing to a set of old stone steps, and the clue spoke about "seven up and seven down" - the next line was maybe "make the wall come tumbling round"?
I have no clue who the author was, or what the other books books were about, but I remember liking that one, and wishing I'd saved it for my nieces.
Anyone remember what it was????
