another 8 weeks ??? uugghhh

My DS (15) has a broken leg. 7 weeks ago he fell off of a Mini Harley Motorcycle and broke 2 bones in his leg.

He needed to have 2 flexable rods with screws surgically implanted in his leg (under the skin but outside of the bones) Origanlly the DR told him he should be able to have them removed in about 6 weeks, possibly up to 8 weeks.

He was put in a hard cast for only 3 weeks. After the 3 weeks the DR said he was healing well, removed the cast and gave DS a removable soft cast called a walking cam and was told come back in 3 more weeks for another xray and to schedule the surgery to have the rods removed.

Well today the DR, told him to come back in 8 More weeks !!!

Apparently his bones are healing very well and to be safe the rods will stay in until November !!!!

Sooooo this means DS will be in a walking cam for our WDW & MNSSHP trip in 3 weeks from now.. He was sooooooo hoping to be out of the cam for our trip.. He can already walk without crutches and without any pain or problems.. I feel bad for our DS because he Hates having his leg in this thing and now for another 8 weeks...

OMG! Such a bad, bad break!! He'll remember this summer for the rest of his life! Not to mention this trip!!

DS broke his leg a couple of years ago (the first full day school was out for the summer). They set it so well in the ER, the ortho dr just wrapped a solid cast around the soft cast they put on. We were lucky! I remember they told us it would take longer, too, than the original 'guess date'. Must just be the bad break.... Your DS would be bigger and heavier than my guy was back then. I think that weight baring has something to do with it.... Poor guy!!

I am so sorry your DS has broken his leg this badly. I can sympathize with you and him. My son was 7 when he broke his femur and although he didn't need rods or screws as I first feared he was in a body cast/wheelchair for 12 weeks and out of school. He couldn't do anything for himself at all. Poor kid. The orthopedist told me the reason he didn't need rods/screws was because he was a young boy and his bones were still growing. They don't even set the leg back exactly the way it was . . . they just put it as close as they could get it and let the callus grow around the break. He said older kids and adults have it worse as the bone is no longer growing and has to be put back exactly the way it was and held together with the rods/screws and takes longer to heal properly. When they finally took his cast off his leg was about 3/4 inch shorter than the other one but I am so relieved now that it looks just about normal. It has healed nicely. Pixie dust to your son. I really feel for him and I hope you can all find some way to enjoy your trip.

yup 15 years old, 100 pounds, and 5 foot 5 !!! he is taller then me now

Oh My Gosh.....I did not realize how lucky we were when our guy broke his!! Both you guys have really been through a terrible time!! Oh, your poor babies!! Oh My Gosh!!!

DS is mending but he gets so frustrated that he can't do what he wants when he wants anymore. No bike riding, no karate, no skateboarding and especially no running around in the woods with his friends and their airsoft guns..
