Annual Passholder Package for HP Celebration

I'm planning on attending the HP Celebration in January, and was planning on getting a package once they're available...I'm also likely making at least one other visit in the next year, so I'm considering just buying a season pass now and purchasing the annual passholder package to save money in the long run. From what I understand, the year you have to use the pass begins the first time you use it. I won't be going to Universal until the event in January, so my pass wouldn't be activated until then. Would I still be able to purchase the annual passholder package if I haven't used my pass yet? I don't want to purchase the pass only to find out it wouldn't work with that package, and I'd need to buy the regular package on top of the annual pass.
