Annual pass & room discount question

So we did the math, and it works out as a better deal for us to get the annual pass (since we are taking 2 possible 3 trips in 365 days).

SO my question..
The annual pass will not activate until we go to disney and activate it?
If so - does that mean if we buy it now... but do not go to WDW until September - can we not take advantage of any pass holder discount on rooms until our second trip?

You can take advantage of passholder discounts. When you purchase the pass you get a number that you can use to book a passholder discount room, even if the pass has not yet been activated. We did that last July at AKL.

We activated the pass on the first night at the theme park, but no one ever asked us to see the activated pass.
