Annual pass renewal

I want to confirm that this is correct. We are about to renew our aps but we have 2 day park hoppers to go towards the renewal. Disney is saying we can do it but we can only do it in person at a theme park. We can renew online or on phone but can't use the old tickets towards renewal even though they can see them in MDE. Is this correct info? It would still save money even if we take a quick weekend trip but would do it on phone if we could.

You can only upgrade tickets in person.
