This is the first time we have bought annual pass. It is set to expire in 2 weeks. What is the benefit of renewing it now or waiting until our next trip? Does it have to be renewed before it expires or do i have a window to renew? If we renew it now does it become effective now or the first time scanned at the gate? Thanks!

You have to renew no later than 30 days after the expiration date. If you renew it is valid from the expiration date even if you renew it after the expiration date. For example, the pass expires Aug 1st. you have 30 days past August 1st to renew, even if you renew on say August 25th the pass will revert back to August 1st as its starting date. If you wait and buy a new pass you will then begin again when you activate that new pass. The only real benefit to renew is a cost savings. For example an AP renewal is currently is $552.74 and a new pass is $648.59.

If you go to the locked sticky Everything About WDW Tickets in the TPA&S Forum, especially Post #15-G, you can get a lot more information. An easy way to get to the sticky is by clicking on the link in my signature. The ticket sticky is your friend!

if your next trip is more than a month away you're better off buying a new one.

We've gotten APs twice and are buying our 3rd set in just over a month :)

First set we bought in Sept 2010 they expired in Sept 2011; bought the next ones is January 2012 - they expired in Jan 2013....it's been a long stretch and we're buying the next round in September. No reason to pay for the months we're not going to use.

It is more accurate to say more than TWO months ($648.59-$552.74=$95.85 - $552.74/12=$46.06 monthly payment - ergo $46.06*2= roughly the cost diffrerence of a new pass vs. a rewewal discount). If your next trip is 3 or more months after your pass expires you are better off letting it expire and buying a new one that will then be good for another 12 months.
