Annual Pass question...

I just decided to take a quick, last minute reservation to WDW 12/13 to 12/17. I am also heading down in April so I am going to purchase an AP. I would like to get the cheapest one possible, but I believe that is the Gold pass. The trouble is that I believe 12/17 is the beginning of the black out dates on the Gold pass. I was thinking that I could possibly purchase the Gold and maybe go to Disney Springs for the day, but should I decide I really need more park time, would I be able to go to Guest Services and upgrade that to a Platinum pass on that day?

I'm pretty sure these new tiers with blackout dates are only for FL residents. Us non locals are stuck with the expensive ones.

The gold pass with blackout dates is also available to DVC members.
