Annual pass - does it ever go "on sale" ?

We are a family of 5 going to Universal in January. We've been a bunch of times before and I've always gotten my tickets with points (Airmiles) - then we upgrade them when we get to the park. This time, I don't have enough points for all 5 of us so we will be buying 2-3 Season APs on our own. Is there any better way to do this ? Do they come on sale ? Is there a way to get APs and save any money (buy promo tickets and upgrade ?)

I'm not familiar with the details, but I'm pretty sure it is possible to buy some tickets from Undercover Tourist at a discount and upgrade them to APs at the park. It didn't sound like a huge savings, so I never investigated it.

Last year, there was a "sale" where you got an extra 3-6 months added to the 12-month pass (https://wsvn.com/news/local/universal-orlando-offers-up-to-6-months-free-on-annual-passes/). I was hoping that it would be repeated this year, but I haven't seen it show up.

Every year lately they’ve offered up to three free months to promote the mardi gras concerts. I know I’ve gotten it at the end of January and recieved the free months. I don’t remember when they normally start that promotion.

Do you think it would work if you upgraded UT tickets too ? Or just an outright purchase of the passes ?

I upgraded Undercover Tourist tickets early January 2019 and got the 6 months free on our Preferred annual passes. I've been to Universal 3 times this year and we have a 4th trip this December, I've really enjoyed the parks this year.

I don't know if you're an FL resident, or not, but I recently got notification of an AP deal for FL residents up to $75 off depending on what pass you get.
