Annual Pass and dining discounts

Aside from the ability to purchase a TIW (Tables in Wonderland?) card, is there any advantage to having an Annual Pass and dining if you don't want to purchase TIW (or whatever it is)?

In other words, I can't decide whether or not to get a length of stay pass, or purchase an annual pass. In the AP description, it states that there are dining advantages, but doesn't go into any detail.

Any thoughts?

Also, on the same subject, what advantage would an AP holder have with room discounts? It seems as though Disney is always offering discounts during certain parts of the year. How does having an AP trump that?

Yep a number of the restaurants have AP discounts. They don't apply to alcoholic beverages, and there may be blackout dates or restrictions. If you will be doing a lot of dining at participating restaurants, and you order alcohol, TIW may be a better deal.

There are often some room discounts targeted to AP holders. If I have to book a Disney resort outside of my DVC points, I have actually found the best deal to be booking through a third party reseller, but I have used AP discounts at times.

There are a few restaurants that offer 10% off with an AP. I've used the discount at TRex, Biergarten and Captain's Grille. I think most of them are resort TS restaurants. You also get 10% off in the gift shops as well.

As for the AP discount it may or may not be a better discount than the public offer, but I've found it seems to be offered on more rooms. For example a couple years ago the CL rooms at BC were not included in the public discount at the time, but they were included in the AP discount. I also seem to be able to book these discounted rooms much closer to our dates while the public offer often expires long beforehand.

I would have to work the numbers, but I dont think there would ever be a reason I would consider an AP just for dining purposes. The real value comes in the savings over the cost of the length of stay pass especially if you can get a few trips out of it.
