I've seen varying reports of this so was hoping to get a current answer. How long does a cruise need to be to see the animation show at animators palate? We were really disappointed when it didn't happen on our 5 night on the Fantasy, I don't care for the crush show.

Does it differ by ship?

Edited to clarify, I'm referring to the show that adds in the guest drawings.

Official number from DCL is 7+ nights. We did not have it on our 5-night cruise on the Magic that embarked May 30 of this year.

Actually, I just looked at what DCL lists for Animation Magic and I see it's kind of unclear as to which of the 4 original ships *do* actually do it. To me, the following implies that it's only on the Disney Magic (again, only on 7+ night sailings) and Disney Fantasy?

On the Disney Magic and the Disney Wonder
Be drawn into a spacious yet stylized dining room that recalls a real-life, hand-drawn environment in black and white. Animator’s Palate boasts a fantastic architectural design, where proportions bend and slant suddenly and sketches showcasing characters and scenes from Disney and Disney·Pixar films adorn the walls around you.

Dinner shows include:

  • Drawn to Magic
Behold the evolution of animation—from pencil test to ink-and-paint. Follow a hero's storytelling journey through Disney and Pixar animation, where wishing upon a star paves the way for happily-ever-after. In an emotional finale, the black-and-white interior of the restaurant is transformed with splashes of vibrant color. Join Sorcerer Mickey as he leads the fun!
  • Animation Magic (available on 7-night and longer sailings on the Disney Magic)
Try your hand at drawing your very own character—and then watch in wonder as your creation becomes part of the show, dancing alongside some classic Disney characters. You won't believe your eyes!

On the Disney Dream and the Disney FantasyStep inside a colorful restaurant filled with everything you would expect to find inside an animator's studio. Character sketches, maquettes, light boxes, paint brushes, colored pencils, computer work stations and other tools of the animation trade delightfully decorate the venue, and scenes and characters from popular Disney films adorn the walls—creating a one-of-a-kind ambience sure to captivate the entire family.

Dinner shows include:

  • Undersea Magic
Immerse yourself in the underwater world of the Disney·Pixar film Finding Nemo. As you dine, enjoy a visit from some of your favorite Finding Nemo friends, via spectacular digital animation and puppetry. You may even share in a conversation with Crush, the totally tubular turtle from the hit movie!
  • Animation Magic (available on the Disney Fantasy)
Try your hand at drawing your very own character—and then watch in wonder as your creation becomes part of the show, dancing alongside some favorite classic Disney characters. You won't believe your eyes!

It's really frustrating since those ships aren't doing longer cruises from Florida. I feel like doing Crush instead is silly since the animation is the whole theme of the restaurant.
Completely agree! I forget what thread it was, but I was complaining about this very issue a few months ago. My daughter would LOVE Animation Magic, and it's very frustrating that the 7-nights are so rare. We have to fly anyway so I'm not opposed to a non-FL port, but even allowing for that, there are basically none in the 48-contiguous states that occur during a time when my daughter is off from school.

Officially it has to be 6 nights or more. On a six night cruise you don’t get Pirate Night menu so you get twice in AP to do the show.

In my own experience I’ve had it on a 3 and 4 night cruise on both the Magic and Wonder but it seems to vary on those ships.

I’ve never had it on a cruise less than 6 nights on the Dream (and never sailed on the Fantasy for less than 7 but I would suspect it’s the same as the Dream.)

We have had Animation Magic on 7-night cruises on the Dream.

I agree with holula that a cruises with Animation Magic are typically 6 nights or longer, so that all guests can get both menus/experiences at all 3 of the restaurants.

We’ve had it on a 6 night on the Magic and a 6 night on the Dream as well as 7 nighters on the fantasy.

I think the OP is referencing the show where they animate your drawings and that isn't on the Magic.

It is shown on 7+ night cruises on the Magic, Wonder, Fantasy and Dream. I've seen it twice on the Wonder, most recently this summer, so it definitely isn't limited to Magic and Fantasy. The Dream rarely does longer cruises (which is why you rarely see her mentioned), but when she does, she shows Animation Magic.

I even saw it once on a 3-night Magic cruise, but that was during Covid reopening so an unusual situation. It can occasionally show on shorter cruises, but that isn't the norm or anything to expect. It does not typically show on 5-night cruises on any ship.

Yes, this is one of a long list of things I don't like about the newer ships replacing most of the older ships' Florida routes.

Well yeah, because the name of that show is "Animation Magic". OP's title is abundantly clear as to what they're referring to.

They definitely do it on the Wonder, which I believe is the only ship in the fleet where they do it on shorter cruises. Specifically, 2- to 5-night cruises out of Australia and New Zealand. For the 2-night cruises they do the debarkation breakfast in whichever restaurant guests didn't have dinner, meaning some guests on these cruises do Animation Magic at breakfast before they leave the ship.

It seems that Disney was testing the waters a bit after covid and that's what they've used as the basis for the Aus/NZ cruises I cited above. They even refer to them as "Magic at Sea" cruises which I believe was the same branding they used for the Magic's covid-era cruises.

I can’t understand why they do Crush as the primary show on shorter cruises. The Animation Magic is so much more exciting for my kids and they are always crushed (pun not intended) on shorter sailings when it’s not available.

It’s looks like the Disney Adventure is getting Animation Magic on its rotational dining…I wonder how it will work with even bigger dining rooms.

We have only done 7+ night cruises so far, 2 on the Magic and 2 on the Wonder and the Animation Magic has been done on our last three cruises (2018 on the Magic, 2022 and 2024 on the Wonder).

From what I understand, the Animation Magic show is a lot of stress for the servers to get the timing right. That’s why they might not do it on shorter cruises. Teams don’t know their guests well enough on day 2, having the stressfull show twice a week might be too much stress in the teams etc.

They most definitely do Animation Magic on the Magic. Just saw it on the Magic in March- but its only on 6+ night sailings.
