Animation Academy - Do they post what you'll be drawing ahead of time?

I love doing this at Rafiki's Planet Watch at Animal Kingdom in Florida. There you don't know who they're drawing each time until the CMs start setting up for the next session as one is going on.

Is it the same at Animation Academy at DCA or do they post who they'll be drawing when earlier?

TIA!

The first session at 9AM is almost always Mickey Mouse. Before 9:30, they'll put out a sign at the entrance to Animation Academy inside the building that lists all the classes for the day.

Awesome!! Thank you!!

Do you start with a blank sheet like the old Hollywood Studios version or are there guidelines provided like they do now in Animal Kingdom?

We just did this on Friday at DCA. It was blank piece of paper, but the animator had us start by drawing our own guidelines. We were drawing Sully and I didn't think mine looked anything like the character until the end. It was super fun and I want to do it again.

This is what the sign looks like (not my photo - taken from the internet).

Yeah I'm curious, what do the guidelines look like? We get a blank sheet.

The guidelines are a light circle with cross lines in it. You use that - like animators do - as the springing off point.

Since they don't do that at DCA I'll likely skip it. At least with the guidelines there's a shot at it looking like what you're drawing if you're not an artist. Without them? Ew. Not even going to embarrass myself.

I think you should try it.

We went over Thanksgiving and the only one in my family who can draw is dd. The first thing the artist told the class to do was lightly draw a a big cross to use as a guideline. You followed him exactly, and in the end all 3 of us had acceptable drawings where you could easily tell who it was, water Luca. Actually, my husband had the best drawing and he is the worst artist among us!

The worst thing that could happen is your drawing wasn't as good as you hoped and you pitch it. The class is short too so it won't eat up a lot of your day.

Here’s my sign from a recent trip. It is so fun. They move at a faster pace now. In and out in about 20 mins. So much fun! We usually go twice a trip.

I am NOT an artistic person AT ALL, but I manage decent drawings from Animation Academy. As you can see from this one, they have you draw your own guidelines.

Oh don't say that-- I can't even draw a stick figure well and I am always amazed when I see my drawings at the end of the Animation Academy at CA. We haven't done it at Rafiki's, but we used to do it back when it was back at Hollywood studios, and I think I like it better at DLR than at WDW. That is probably because we can pick who we want to draw and go at that time. We've done characters like Edna Mode, and Zero and I have a great one I did of Minnie, which I still can't believe I drew. It is one of our favorite things at CA. It is the only place I can actually draw something and have it resemble what I intended!

I took my nephews when they were around 11/13, and they liked it so much we did three characters. lol The animators have always had us draw the guidelines.

I wouldn't write it off just because you don't have the guidelines provided. They do walk you through doing the guidelines yourself and it is really quite simple. While I am an artist (so I acknowledge my bias), I've gone with people who aren't and they greatly enjoy themselves and produce recognizable characters even drawing the guidelines themselves.

Honestly I like it better doing my own guidelines because I can have more control over my art.

I would give it at least one try if you see a character you like on the board before deciding it isn't for you since you like doing the one at WDW.

I agree that it's worth a try even with doing your own guidelines.

Having the "class" do their own guidelines also allows them to do a broader range of characters as not all characters start with a simple "plus sign" and circle. I have definitely done classes there where they had you set guidelines with the horizontal line very low on the vertical one or make the vertical line extra tall and where the head shape they instructed you to do more of an oval or slightly flattened circle. Still super easy and their instructions are great.
