Animal vaccinations....

my niece just purchased a beautiful yellow lab from NY...they got it last Saturday. She is from a wonderful kennel and yet she has come down with Parvo. She had one shot at the kennel and this may be her only hope of making it. They are not sure yet if she will survive.
I am always amazed at what our vet says......ALOT of people only have the rabies shot to get them licensed......YET these diseases kill so many animals around......
SO go and get your furbabys vaccinated.....only takes a visit once a year..

Vaccinating once a year is actually overkill and many times dangerous. Current protocols do not advocate yearly vaccines and vets who stay current in their studies understand that.

I do understand what you are saying - many people don't do any vaccines which is sad since many things can be prevented by getting them. But yearly vaccines are a big no-no for me and my animals.

It's very important to understand what the vaccines are, what the risks associated with each of them are, and what the recommended dosage/frequency is. Then you can make an educated decision regarding what your animal needs in order to stay protected from everything we can protect them from.

I hope that sweet puppy pulls through... parvo is very scary but is not always a death sentence. Glad she's getting good care!

haha WEIRD! i JUST had all my kittys vaccs. done today!
yup yup, and she got her stitches removed from getting spayed.
they said she doenst need to be in until next year.
AND i even payed for it.
what can i say, im mature for my age

I'm really sorry to hear about your neice's puppy. I hope she pulls through.

I'm not one for yearly vaccs. either. My whippet had a bad reaction at age 12 to her vaccs. and I never had her vacc. after that. She lived to be 17.

And I don't understand why legally we have to vacc. yearly for rabies when the vacc., per the vet, lasts for 3 years. That's really over doing it.

Hugs to your neice and her new puppy. Did any of her littermates become ill?

last year the vaccinations in our area was changed to one rabies shot every third year and I have my dogs papers on when her next vaccination is for her distemper and parvo and something else in it......but the whole point of this is puppies need them to get them started in life ....if you take your dog for walks where other animals go.......yes the vet said to get those shots......if they are boarded while we go to Disney our dog also gets a kennel cough shot, and we make sure she has all her updated shots.....
Our dog does not get any shots that are not required or needed. So the kennel cough shot is only given to her when we are one month before our putting her in the kennel....

We rescued a Golden Retriever puppy from a pet store in October and he became ill the second night he was here. The golden my mom and I bought when I was in college had parvo, so I freaked when Pirate got sick.

Your niece's puppy was probably to young to get the second and third parvo shot. Thankfully Pirate didn't have parvo, just a virus. Our vet cautioned us not to take him to PetSmart or any dog parks until he had all of his parvo shots. I believe he had three parvo shots spaced 2 to 4 weeks apart.

My golden that did have parvo lived 14 very good years. So while parvo is scary and very dangerous, there is hope.

Isn't there a 3 year rabies vaccine AND a 1 year? I think at our old vets those were the options. Two different shots with different options.
