The weather forecast for next week does not look encouraging. Which rides/attractions at AK shut down for rain (not lightning)? Does the Lion King and other shows go on if its raining?
I personally think AK is the least rain friendly park. So much of the park is outdoor walking trails. I think the rides in Chester and Hester area close during rain. But it seems to me that we saw the Lion King show during a shower two years ago --- I could be wrong.
We also found AK to be the least friendly park for rain. It came an absolute downpour after the parade so went to see FOTLK but it was closed due to a nearby lightening strike-so I guess as long as there is no lightening then the shows would go on as scheduled. The park does seem to have some drainage issues--or it just rained harder than the drains were capable of handling. We waded through water about 3 inches deep before we called it a day and headed over to Epcot instead. At this time of year in Florida I don't think the weather forecasts ever look encouraging
Trying to remember what all we did that day but I know we saw the Tarzan show and the CMs were out motioning and informing people the show was about to begin and that it was a show under overhead coverage so we'd be dry for a bit *lol* I believe we also rode Primeval, in fact I think we rode that just before we went to see Tarzan
Shortly after that we returned to our room though but that was the day we flew in and were tired from an early early morning and wanted to change for dinner.
We still managed to have fun. We even laughed our way thru a horribly downpouring MVMCP night. Oh and light crowds that day LOL Wonder why?
The only rain we had on our last trip was at AK - and we were all ready soaked from Kali River. So we headed to Safari. I have heard animals are more active when its wet. We did see a lot of animals. However we were cold!!! And this was on a previously hot day! We should have gone to locker and changed to dry clothes and gotten our ponchos and we could probably have lasted longer. The lockers are near front of park though and KRR is near back. The park is very spread out!
We did AK in the rain. DH and DD rode Kali over and over in the rain. No worrying about being wet, that's for sure. We also did Tough to be a Bug, Festival of the Lion King and ate at Pizzafari. It wasn't too bad.
On our last trip we entered AK after rainfall, and it was beautiful! All the animals in the trails and the Safari were out because it was cooler (this was in August. We entered the FOTLK 'theater' just as it started to rain again. It was raining buckets by the time the show started, but it went on without problems, since the rain didn't come in.
I agree that AK is not very 'rain-friendly'. When it rains, there are very few places to go for cover, and the park is really spread out.
On our last trip it poured after about 1pm. We were about done anyway, this just sped up the leaving. I would highly recommend ponchos in the type of downpour that occurs. Those without them looked like drowned rats and were very uncomfortable. Also...don't wear white if you're planning on getting wet, it can be very revealing.
One of our best memories was walking through Animal Kingdom during a light rain. The rain cooled the park down and the animals were very active. The tigers get very playful during a light shower. We had no problems with any of the shows.
And the hike to FOTLK must take about 15 minutes! hehehe...I remember walking there (towards Camp Minnie Mickey) and was like "oh my god, are we THERE yet?" hehehe...it's seriously a shorter walk to your car than it is to this attraction!
But you're on vacation - don't let rain spoil too much fun! Head to your resort, dry off and explore. Or, if you are VERY brave, hit up DisneyQuest...it does get crowded there during the rain though!
AK is definitely not the place to be if it's going to rain all day. But, if it's just one of those typical, Florida mid-afternoon showers it can be fun. On my last trip, we had a brief downpour while on the Safari. The rain stopped and the animals were very playful. The elephants were splashing around in their pool and other animals were also very active.
AK during the rain = not good, you're going to get drenched.
AK after the rain = lots of fun, the animals come out to play.
