I have never been there at night, but maybe you could take the morning off and do something else and then head to the park around 2 or 3 pm and stay til 8pm. We are doing that one day of our trip.
We have tried it once. The nighttime feel is cool, but different. What we did note was that the CS food places were much more crowded than usual. We'd do it again, but probably arrange to eat later, after we had left the park. We lost too much time waiting in line for CS food.
When we were there it was raining, so YMMV. Kali river was open, Africa was closed, Dino area was open. We went just to take pictures. That part was very cool, it was misty and dark. The Asia area turned out the best. I "think" Everest was open but I cannot say for sure. We didn't ride it then.
Animal Kingdom is really pretty at night. You notice stuff that you don't normally notice in the day. If you can, definitely ride Everest in the dark; way cooler than in the day, and you can actually see the Yeti since your eyes are used to the dark.
We were there at night last December and as much as I love AK, it was kind of boring. Most of the animals were "put away" for lack of a better term, so that cut out a big chunk of why we were at the park. DH and I walked right onto Dinosaur twice in a row but after that we just decided to go back to our hotel.
Animal Kingdom is our 2nd favorite park. We loved it at night. We usually do Parks only in the mornings these days, maybe once in awhile at night. AK is really cool at night. The lighting is fantastic. To us, it was worth going over later in the day & staying til dark. It'll probably be a must for us each trip now.
I would not give up one for the other. We enjoy the AK during the day, Rope Drop, etc. and it is great at night. If you can plan a half day for both times...I think that would be the best.
We have done late magic hours for the last 3 years at Animal Kingdom so here is what we have experienced......
All the animals are put away so that means no walking on the animal trails, no conservation station and wildlife train, and no Kilimanjaro Safari. No shows perform that late either (i.e. Lion King). Basically it just has the few major rides open - Kali River Rapids, Expedition Everest, It's Tough To Be a Bug, and Dinosaur and a few smaller kid rides like triceratop spin. Because there is so few rides open the wait times don't seem to be noticeably smaller (except last year at 7PM we got to ride Kali River Rapids 2 times in a row since noone was in line - we were soaked )
We have always just attended the shows, seen characters, rode the Safari, and walked the trails during the day. Then made a late dinner reservation (last year at Yak and Yeti's at 7:30) and before dinner enjoyed the rides. After dinner we walked out of the park at night with no one around (very neat experience). Of course I have never felt Animal Kingdom is a half day park if you take the time to experience each trail, watch all the shows (which we always do), wait in line for characters, and ride the rides.
It is the most wonderful peaceful walk back to the bus, after a huge meal at Yak 'n Yeti........ there is stuff that you don't really notice during the day, because so many people are around.
Put my vote in the "yes" column. We've only done EMH pm once at AK, but it was really neat. EE is so cool at night! The lanterns and other lighting totally transformed the park. It was very relaxing.
No, the animals weren't out, but we really enjoyed just strolling around and riding the few rides that were open.
