They did a great job. Stayed very true. Just wish they had given it about 30 more minutes for more details/back story about District 12 and the games. Overall though thoroughly enjoyed :thumbsup2

I am beyond excited to see The Hunger Games tomorrow. I have tickets and reserved seating at AMC Dine-In here in NJ. I'm going to re-read the book today and tonight in preparation. :thumbsup2

Going tomorrow morning!! I actually woke up last night at midnight to use the bathroom (you had to get that detail, right?) and sat in bed pouting because I knew people were watching the movie and I wasn't!!

I'll come back and post my thoughts.

Anyone else?:confused3

Loved it! They did such a good job with it. How long do we have to wait before Catching Fire???

My wife and I both thought if felt too hurried and that they left out too much of the stuff that connected you to the characters. It seems that if you haven't red the books you'd be lost and most of it wouldn't make sense.

I loved the movie I thought it was excellent and stayed very true to the book. I had two minor complaints. I thought the capital couture was so cheesy and you didnt really get the sense of how katniss has mixed feeling for peeta. It seemed in the movie she fell for him in the arena and that wasnt the case at all in the book. I think if you never read the book and just saw the movie you would assume katniss is with peeta now. jennifer lawrence was the perfect katniss

We just got back from the theater and my DS11 hated it. He has never seen a violent tv show or movie and he was nauseated and almost threw up as we left. He told me he doesn't want to keep reading the book or see any more movies.

POTENTIAL SPOILER

That being said, I've read the trilogy several times and I felt the characterizations were hurried, ignored, and flat. I HATED that Cato was humanzied on top of the cornucopia before he was knocked off to the mutts and Rue looked way too young to be in the 12 to 18 year old category. I enjoyed the movie but it felt very rushed, and wish they had taken more time to explore the love triangle concept.

Woody Harrelson was fun though!

I thought the same thing when I saw it, needed little more depth for the characters, but saw it again tonight with 2 people who hadn't read the books and they loved it and followed it fine. I think if you read the books you know what you are missing but if you didn't you don't.

Jennifer Lawrence was AMAZING as Katniss!

I agree with this. I thought that the relationship between Katniss and Gale was also a bit weak on the screen. I didn't really feel the emotional connection between them at all. I did like the Capital dress though; I thought it was totally in line with how I envisioned them while reading the book.

That's too long to wait!!!

DS and I saw it today and we loved it! Yes, I loved the book more, in fact I think DS did as well, but the film was really well done. I was hoping they would do the book justice.

:thumbsup2

For me, I thought this was done a lot better than I expected. It didn't tear the text apart as much as Twilight's film did. I am planning on re-reading the book again though and see if I can point out any other discrepancies.

DD11 and I saw it Friday night and she says it's the best movie she's ever seen. We were disappointed in a few areas but loved it none the less. We wish more time had been given to Rue's interactions with Katniss. I loved hearing the reactions of those around us during the movie. The scenes with Katniss and Peeta in the cave and then them switching to Gale watching them was so funny! Everyone just went AHHHHH! We all jumped and screamed at one point. DD11 will probably go see it again sometime next weekend with DH and I hope to see it again with a friend who just started the book last week. We made a date to see it together!

I can't believe we have to wait a year and a half to see the next one! It's almost as long a wait to see the new season of Downton Abbey! Guess I will reread book 2 before I see it. DD11 is reading Catching Fire now.

TTFN :tigger:

I haven't seen the movie yet but I have to say of everyone I know that saw this movie the first time I heard ANYONE say anything good about it was in this thread.

My husband is talking to a few other friends that went to see it and tend to agree with us on movie choices, if they didn't like it either we aren't going to spend the money. The book was awesome but there are very very few movies I have ever liked that were made from books. (I didn't even like the harry potter movies that so many loved)

Things I have heard is that they leave out all the character development and important stuff, that if you hadn't read the book you would not have understood anything because they left out all the details, etc.

We saw it this weekend as well. I thought they did a good job over all. At 2.5 hours the only way to add in more detail was to cut in other areas. I think you get the general idea of Katniss' connection with Gale and on the train back I think you get an inkling of where she stands with Peeta when she says she wants to forget. Peeta says he doesn't. That can be taken in lots of ways but having read the book I took it both to mean their relationship and the games themselves. I did not imagine Cinna the way he was portrayed. I imagined him a bit more flambouyant, strong, caring and flambouyant. But his character played well for what we saw of him.

I haven't read the book....but I thought the movie was good. I would have liked to know a little more about the characters, but we were able to follow it just fine.

I would agree with what you said. I did like the added scenes and dialogue for Donald Sutherland as President Snow. I also feel the downplaying of the mockingjay pin was folly, but we shall see how it is handled in the second film.

Going to see it this week sometime with G, who has not and will not read the books. I don't think he will need any explanations or lose much value of the story.
