I recently looked into the geneology of my family, it is it very interesting. My cousin did most of the leg work on my dad's side.

I want to research my husband's heritage. When I 1st married him, I looked up our surname, basically looking for a family Crest. My FIL comes from Ireland, so imagine my surprise to learn our surname is Spanish! I asked FIL how that could be, and he said after WW1 some of the Chilean Army settled in Ireland. I think this is interesting, and would like to look into it.

The subcription price to Ansestry.com is $189.00 a year. Is it worth it?

I dont think so.. We did that until we found out it cost money. :confused3

I have used it before... the problem is that you have to pay EACH year... I would only make the monetary commitment if you plan on doing some heavy duty research... Another thought is to have someone go halfs with you...

It is a good deal - for the access to census records.

For routine genealogical lookup - try RootsWeb.com. That is free and is just as good - or better - than Ancestry.com. Once you have exhausted looking up family lines on RootsWeb, you may want to do more extensive research using the census records via Ancestry.

If you want to dive right into the census, there are options that cost a lot less than 189. I think you can get basic access for about a hundred bucks. The top price probably gives you access to immigration records, and marriage records, and newspaper articles, etc. These are useful once you have amassed a large database. I don't think they would be of much use to you as a newbie to genealogy. I have been doing this for fifteen years and have never gotten much use out of anything other than census records. I use those constantly, but first I exhausted my searches on Rootsweb. I use Rootsweb instead of the similar search capabilities of Ancestry. I just like Rootsweb better, even though I have subscribed to Ancestry for years.

Good luck. BEWARE - it is addictive.

Tell me about it! I did not sleep a wink last night, ok, maybe 2 hours. I had to wait up for my Dh to tell him he is married to a Mayflower descendant, LOL! In the meantime, I discovered that my grandparents in the 4th generation were 2nd cousin, and my grandparents in the 7th generation were actually 1st cousins. *(eew). It is easy to forget how tiny the world was back then.

The portion I have was done by one of my cousins, it traces my paternal grandmother's family. Now I need to find out about my grandfather's family, and ALL of my mom's family...not to mention my Dh's family! :faint:

But I think I am going to have fun doing this. I should of done this years ago!

Before you subscribe, check your local library. Ours has it available to everyone at any of the library computers. You can access some genealogy stuff through their website at home, too. But, Ancestry.com and Genealogy.com are available there.

Might save you some money................

Also try www.familysearch.org. It's a site run by the Mormon Church. Although we are not Mormon, we found TONS of records about our family going back to the 1400's.

And it is cost-free. :sunny:

he got a majority of the geneology from his grandfathers sister......last week we found the cemetery with his great great great grandfather and then another cemetery with his great and great great...it was thrilling to see the resting places of them .....but more info on the headstones...one of the monuments was huge and stood way way over my head.....we found alot of the siblings of the greats......
