Ancestry.com anyone use it?

Just curious, when you have an account with them, is there a way to export the information? (other than writing it down)

such as a .pdf document, etc.?

copy to a thumb drive or export a spreadsheet file?

in other words, make a copy of the "tree" you create.

My family uses geni.com...an amazing FREE site that doesn't get enough publicity. Seeing the family *tree* is incredible and you and anyone else in your family can continue to add information as they come across it.

That's geni.com

I use Family Tree Maker. It is available through Ancestry.com. It links directly to your tree on Ancestry. I don't even go to my Ancestry pages very often. Everything is available in Family Tree Maker. The little leaves appear in Family Tree Maker and I automatically document information on the tree on my computer. There are many ways to produce output from the program. I love it!

You can export your tree from Ancestry.com as a GED formatted file. This is the standard genealogy file format that's used by lots of software. I use the PAF5 free software from the FamilySearch.org web site.

Thanks for the replies. good to know. I already have about five levels that I have collected over the years, but never "plugged in" the data to a tree program.

I live in UK, and started to look for DWs ancestors. used free sites etc, found her direct cousins, who her father had lost contact with his sisters after the 2nd world war. We met up in St Petes when we where over 2 years ago, they flew in from LA, and we visited them last year. They had been trying to find my DW and her brothers for quite a few years and had give up, so worked well.
Have since found numerous other members , and from another tree, discovered her connection back through kings and queens to Robert the Bruce of Scotland, around 1000.But going to delete a lot as want to try and concentrate from a certain time, prob around 1700, as it gets extremely confusing with so much info
I put the tree on www.tribalPages.com its free and you can store quite a bit on it

thats an interesting site.

but when I googled it, there was also a listing for a scam.

it seems some people in nigeria figured out how to get e-mail addresses from that site and use them to send e-mail asking for money. (note that the scams reported are several years old)

We've (20 in my family alone) been using the site since it started and have had zero email scams sent to us. I wouldn't hesitate to use it........in fact I wonder about the validity of the nigeria email claims.

it dosen't surprise me in the least about them using a web site like that to initiate a scam.

ANY site that you could dig up an e-mail address would make you a pontential target from the scammers.

the best defense is to be forwarned about any kind of scam, and not respond to the bait.;)

It does look like a good site. I think that what I cam going to do is use all the free sites first, as I have quite a bit of information saved over the years, and then when I can't go any farther, go to the paid site.

I DO like the looks of that family tree program, (and its on sale!!! woohoo!!)

just gotta put down the RUM and start typing!;)

Check your library before buying it. At our local library you can access the whole site for free because the library has an agreement with ancestry.com. So you don't need to buy a membership. However you can't access it from your computer at home, you have to access it through the library computers themselves.
