We are approximately 10 hours (525 miles each way) and I don't really want to drive the wife's new car down so I looked into renting a car locally. I can rent a standard size (Ford Fusion or Nissan Altima) for under $200.00 with 3000 allowed miles. It's well worth it to me to not put the wear and tear on my own car.

Just wondering if anybody else does this, and if there are any issues I'm missing.

I have rented many times near my home for various trips. Sometimes I need a bigger vehicle and other times the car I was using was getting older. I will say I have never rented a vehicle that had a mile limit from the big rental chains in my area (Hertz and Enterprise mostly). Usually the rental is still cheaper than flying to and from where I am going, especially if I would need a rental car once I got to my destination.

We arrive this week we are coming from upstate NY and we rented a van through enterprise we are driving down and back. We got a good rate through my husbands work so we couldn't pass that up.

Nothing wrong with doing that. We usually rent a car if we are taking a long trip to save the wear and tear on our own car.

we have driven to orlando many times since the 1970's and we rented a car for the first time for our trip this past july.
we live in the niagara falls/buffalo new york area and rented a full size suv from hertz for 18 days and it cost $565 with unlimited miles.
all we had to do was pay for gas and make sure the gas tank was no less than half full when we returned it.
it worked out great.
i would definitely suggest renting a car especially if you don't want to put the wear and tear on your own and/or are concerned that your own may not like the journey lol.

We rented an SUV a couple of years ago. It was nice for everyone to have extra room. It also let us check it out, without a salesman along for a test drive. So it was part convenience/part research.

just watch the fine print in the contract

some 'deals' prohibit taking rental vehicles out of state .... which would not be a problem UNTIL you HAD a problem . . .

I checked this nothing stated in contract regarding where you can take the car. Just that mileage is allowed up to 3000 miles without additional mileage charge.

I was looking into it for my upcoming trip as I didn't want to put mileage on either my car or my friends car. We were getting ready to settle on a price from Avis when my friend volunteered her vehicle. I made sure she was comfortable putting the mileage and wear and tear on her car.

Even with renting the car and the gas, it would have been half the price per person as it would have been flying. If it wouldn't have been my friend insisting we take her car, we would have been renting.

I hear ya. Cheapest flights I can find are around $800.00 and since we're hitting univeral we'd still need a car so another $175.00 so close to $1000.

Can rent the car/gas and one night in a hotel going down for less than $400.

$600 savings buys my park tickets. :cool1:

My parents used to rent cars for their vacation. They didn't have a large car and they didn't want to put all of those miles on theirs. So they rented.

It was great. They could pack everything they wanted and they didn't have to worry about cleaning the car when it came back.

Of course there was that one time that they felt they had to run the vac in it before they returned it. But it was just that one time. That popcorn fight was kind of impromptu. :rotfl2:

About driving the car out of state. I have only ever had to tell them that I was going out of state and which states I would be in. I was never given a higher rate because of it.

We used to long ago when our children were still small, grandparents would come along and we would split a van rental for the size and room...

Once there at WDW, never moved it from the parking lot... I'm talking 30 years ago..

Now, when we drive, over taking the train, we use our own car... It's 2100 miles round trip and with these newer cars, that's a drop in the bucket...

We hardly drive anywhere at home so those miles don't bothers us and by not renting anymore, quite a savings... and as before... Once there car stays in the resort lot...

Doing it for the 2nd year in a row this February. Coming from northern NJ. We love a car at WDW, don't like the expense/inconvenience of flying, and just all around enjoy the road trip part of our vacations. We drive almost anywhere.

Now that our cars are a) older and b) bigger than we really need for just the 2 of us, renting is a no-brainer.

Even if we would have rented a car it would have only costed us around $250 each and for a flight it would have cost us each $400 (that included parking fees). Now with only paying for gas, we each are saving $300!! That is almost my park ticket paid for in the price.
