Anaheim to Santa Monica without a car?

Does anyone know if it would be possible to get to Santa Monica from Anaheim by public transport as we're not hiring a car? If so, roughly how long would it take? Or is it just a stupid idea that I should forget about?!!

The MTA Trip Planner says 2 1/2 to 3 hours, starting at "Disneyland" with the #460 bus, then transferring to one of several buses to get to "Santa Monica". If you have a particular place in mind in SM that might narrow your choices.
