Amtrak Questions

I will be taking Amtrak (Silver Meteor from Orlando to Charleston) for the first time this fall and have several questions for the more experienced Amtrak riders. Does Amtrak pricing stay pretty consistent or will the prices change as it gets closer to the travel dates?

Can anyone compare Amtrak coach seats to airline(Delta) coach seats--are the seats about the same size or larger?? I've looked all over the Amtrak site but I can't find seat dimensions anywhere...

Has anyone had a "roomette" on the Silver Meteor? Is it worth it in terms of space and quietness for two adults(one skinny minnie and one pooh sized) on an 8 hour trip? If you leave the roomette to go to the dining car, can you lock the door?

Thanks in advance!!

We travel only on Amtrak, and the seats in coach are 2 by 2, quite roomy with no arm rest between the two. .

We have done the roomette, its small, real small. Each person has a seat that faces the other. Really no place to put your feet up unless one person puts their feet in the toilet lid and the other puts theirs on the console next to the seat. The only time the room seems big enough, is at night when the beds are made. One person is in the upper bunk and the person on the bottom gets the 2 seats made into a bed.
The upper bunk is a tight squeeze to get up and into, my wife is 120 pounds and just makes it.

As for the door locks, they only lock from the inside. No way to lock and go. We leave our stuff there and go the the dining car, but we leave nothing out. Not alot of room for stuff in the roomette anyway. Never had a problem.

Hi
It's been a few years since I've been on a plane, but last time I was pretty squished. I am 6' tall and had no leg room at all. On the train, I am very comfortable in the coach seats, both width wise and leg room wise. I can sit in the coach seat and put my legs straight out in front of me and just touch the seat in front of me with the soles of my feet. Hope this helps.

Having flown a few years back, I'ld have to say the train seats are larger, leg rests and foot rests and alot of room until the next seat forward. Train seats are like a big barkolounger easy chair. You're not cramped at all and the overhead is up high. Seat tilts way back, and there's a tray on the seat back in front of you for your convenience.

I do not like flying, and I find plane seats small and cramped and claustrophobic, the train seat, coach, has room galore either window or aisle its great.

Quick note, when I was on the website the other day thinking about booking, there was a notice that said Amtrack was closed on some stretch of track from Charlston to Orlando. Not sure why it told me that because I was coming from Va. LOL. Go through the booking process and the notice will be right before you pay. I pretty much ruled the train out for our family, but I want to try it some day.

There was a service disruption a few weeks ago just north of Selma, North Carolina, but there shouldn't be any issues since then. Any train from Virginia, whethor you board in Newport News or Auto-Train in Lorton, has to pass through both Selma and Charleston on its way to Florida.

Occasionally, CSX will have trackwork scheduled (but with CSX, track maintenance doesn't happen very often :) ), which sometimes causes schedules to be adjusted or cancelled. Depending on when you were trying to book, that's the only other explanation I can think of. If you try a different date or train, you shouldn't see that.
