Amtrak discounts?

A friend and I are thinking of travelling by train from NJ to Charlotte, NC to visit another friend we haven't seen in years. Does Amtrak offer any discount codes?Also, what kind of security can I expect? Do they screen your bags?

I've never taken Amtrak but I did look into once to go to WDW and they offered a AAA discount and a discount for children.

There is a link on the Amtrak site for specials. Use that to find the map of the US and then click on where you are traveling. Good luck!

Sign up with Amtrak for their rewards program and you will receive emails about discounts.

There is AAA, NARP (National Association of Railroad Passengers), Student discount (I think still ) and senior. They do not screen baggage, but I've seen random security checks by dogs. It is very economical if you travel by coach, but you are on 'train time' so be patient. I love traveling by train and do it all the time.
