Amish craftmanship

That guy in the photo looks like C. Everett Koop. But Amish? Mmmmmmmm, no.

Could be he's branching out since he's not SG anymore.

C Ann, I know you have a lot of research books on the Amish, but there's a lot more to them than that. I work with them daily and I can assure you that in the summer, they do wear short sleeves. Maybe not the really low order ones, but the newer order sure do. You can't take something from a book and apply it to ALL Amish, there are countless orders, each with a different set of rules.

As for the fireplaces, they never claimed to make the "heater" part of them, but the wooden mantles, or cases, are indeed made by the Amish in Holmes County, Ohio. I personally know one of the manufacturers of these. As for the pictures you posted, of course they're not of the real Amish who make them as they wouldn't want their pictures taken, so those are "models" of Amish men.

The infomercials for these heaters always crack me up...

according to them...

Amish craftsmen move in slow motion...

the only tool they use is a plane...

are able to amazing things with just this one tool...

and they deliver their handcrafted fireplaces (which are in such great demand) one at a time in the back of a buggy.

People that buy the fireplaces like to roll them around their house...while smiling....they also like to read magazines by them and gaze at them while smiling.

Yes - I know about the different orders - and the different rules - and the different clothing- etc.. So far I've looked into at least 25 sub-groups that range from "Old" Order (not "low" order - unless that's a local term you use) to "New" Order (like the Beachy Amish - who may very well allow short sleeve shirts, but since I'm currently still researching only the Old Orders, I don't have that information - yet - LOL).. The information I have gathered isn't solely from books - and I guess I should have been clearer and not used the term "Amish" so loosely.. It's an old habit that's hard to break - simply because I wasn't aware of all of the different orders and sub-groups myself until I started researching them (I had mentioned that previously in one of my very early threads about the Amish.).. A few examples would be the Swiss Amish; Swartzentruber Amish; Nebraska (or sometimes called "White - Top" Amish); etc.. There's a very definite line drawn in the sand between the Old Orders and the New Orders - but I'm still not used to having to identify which order it is that I'm talking about every time I mention them..:goodvibes

As for the photos that were posted - I didn't post them - nor did I say they made the "heater" part of the fireplaces.. That was the work of someone else on this thread.. Just wanted to clarify that for you..:goodvibes

On a more general note - not specifically directed at you - that's all I'm going to say on this thread.. "The fish aren't biting here at the lake - the bait is awful!" ;)

One thing I've noticed is that everyone who has ever visited Lancaster County, went on an Amish farm tour, and a guided buggy ride likes to think that they are an expert on Amish Life...and it's their duty to let everyone know what an Amish expert they are.

If you've read (and actually OWN) a Beverly Lewis book...this qualifies you as a phD in Amish Life. ;)
